Twice this year my Middle Schooler has been faced with movies being shown in class that are questionable. We have addressed these things directly with teachers, but I’d like to know, bigger picture, how movies and media are evaluated? Do they need to go through any evaluation process or approval process with anyone? Thanks.

A. The district is not allowed to show movies without a license solely for entertainment purposes such as student rewards, holiday events, family movie nights, and before/after school programs. Pursuant to the Federal Copyright Act (Title 17, United States Code, Public Law 94-553, 90 Stat. 2541) that governs copyrighted materials, in order for a movie […]

Is there a district position on an elementary school PTA hosting a ‘gala’ to raise general funds (not for a specific purchase)? PTA’s are not independent. The school squashes ideas all the time. It seems exclusionary to have an event with a $90 per couple price tag (plus baby sitting, raffle tickets, auctions, etc.) I understand fundraising, but not treating the PTA (and in turn the school) as a charity. Begging local businesses for donations as if the elementary school is a real charity does not sit well when explaining to our kids what charity is.

A.  While the PTA is affiliated with a school or district, it is actually autonomous from the district in terms of having its own bylaws, protocols, budgeting, accountability, liability coverage, governance structure and standards for membership. With that said, it is within their determination to have a fundraiser. The district policy allows fundraisers, under certain […]

I know that teachers in the elementary schools have requested that the portal be closed down for several weeks, while they input grades but does it need to be closed for SO long? Is that still necessary, especially most teachers are regularly keeping up with inputting their grades? The middle school teachers don’t seem to need this length of time. The trouble is, as parents, we rely on the portal to help our kids stay on top of things. I know the district wants to encourage parents to be involved, but insists on closing it for weeks and weeks, it’s contrary to parent involvement. Can this be reevaluated? Thanks.

A. We are looking into it.

Where could I go to see historical information for the district since it was created? Such as images, site plans, and such? I’m interested in having a highly detailed history of the district, not just what is on the site currently.

A. The website is the most comprehensive that you will find in one place. Other than that, there are records such as board minutes, yearbooks, old documents…to get access to that you would have to go through the records officer 881-0611.

Is it a cost to the district any time police dogs are called in to do a search or is the cost covered by the police department? I understand why it must be done, I’m just wondering.

A. No, it does not cost the district anything and it is a valuable training opportunity for the dogs.

Can we get rid of homeroom for high school or make it optional? It would be worth the 15 minutes of extra sleep for all kids.

A.  The homeroom period is an important time to get valuable information to students.

For when the outdoor seasons begin, Shen should put recycling bins on its athletic fields. During this Fall’s season, I had not seen one recycling bin on any of the fields- just garbage cans, which is ridiculous considering how so many players and spectators bring plastic water bottles to sporting events. I would bring as many as I could home with me and I encouraged others to bring their water bottles home to recycle as well, but still, many were either left on the benches, on the ground, or in the garbage cans. We should get recycling bins because 1. Shen may deposit them and receive money for them 2. It will make our campus prettier and neater and 3. They are better for the environment And no, this is not the first time I’ve brought this up to the school or a school official. Thank you

A.  We have tried recycling containers in the past as well as a Carry-in/Carry-Out trial on our athletic fields. Unfortunately the recycling containers become mixed with trash which the recycling companies will not accept.  We will review options for recycling containers at the various concession areas and request that the Booster Clubs look after them and recycle […]
