Is my son required to take the New York State Test?

Written by on March 30, 2017 in Uncategorized

A. Yes, unless you send a “Refusal to Take the Test.” letter to your child’s principal. This applies only to the Gr. 3-8 tests. NYS Regents are required to graduate. Because students must, by law, take Regents exams to graduate, we recommend that they take the Gr. 3-8 tests to get used to taking standardized […]

My daughter is in a 5th class at Chango. A few months ago, a class parent reached out to me asking if my daughter mentioned how cold the classroom was. She hadn’t, but when I asked her, my daughter said the classroom had been “freezing” and she and many classmates had to wear their winter coats in class. The other parent who notified Chango staff, and was also told by her child that Mr. Czelusniak had mentioned to the students that there was something wrong with the heat/vent. I assumed the problem was fixed. I asked my daughter yesterday if her classroom was still cold, and she said it’s so cold that she still has to wear her winter coat in class. I know that the property maintenance code of NYS requires that classrooms maintain a temperature of not less than 65 degrees fahrenheit during the period the spaces are occupied. Can you please look in to this?

A.  This room has been checked a few times by district staff and it has never been below 68 degrees. Please talk to your principal if you continue to have concerns.

I am a little upset. In orchestra today, I saw a poster called “ShenMen” and the poster said that it is a musical group only for boys. There is no female group like this, why is this there? I feel that this is somewhat discriminatory. Please inform me if this is not true.

Written by on March 30, 2017 in Grapevine

A.  Shen Men is a singing group providing an opportunity for male voices.  There are several diverse extra-curricular singing opportunities throughout the choral (gr 5-12) experience based on voicing.  It is not discriminatory from a gender standpoint, rather, grouped by voicing.

Do students participating in the musicals have to pay or partially pay for their costumes and stuff?

Written by on March 30, 2017 in Grapevine

A.  Students are not required to pay for costumes or props.  Those are borrowed, rented, or made (depending on the requirements) and paid for through ticket sales, program sponsors, and concession sales.  Students may be asked to purchase specific personal garments such as shoes, socks, tights, etc.

My 10th grade son tells me that he, and many others, avoid using the bathrooms at High School East due to some unsavory activities going on in them. Drug deals for example. Has the district considered putting aides in some of the bathrooms so that kids feel safer using the facilities throughout the day? I believe this problem is very widespread and not just antidotal. I will also be contacting the principal about it. Thank you.

A.  The problem is not widespread, but no doubt some students do participate in activities that violate the Code of Conduct.  Monitors will increase their level of supervision.

Are HSE teachers and administrators aware that students can not find a bathroom to use during the day without walking in and finding smokers and students using illegal drugs? This is occurring during the school day and throughout the school. Are there are any procedures currently in place to keep smoking and drugs out of our bathrooms? If so, these procedures are not working! I began asking co-workers, friends, and neighbors if their children complain about the bathrooms in HSE. The response we are hearing from our kids: “We CAN’T and use the bathroom during the school day. We’ll walk in on illegal activity”. The bathrooms are not safe. Is this acceptable to you?

Written by on March 30, 2017 in Grapevine

A.  The monitors supervise the bathrooms daily.  While there is no denying that sometimes students may be doing things in the bathrooms that are in violation of the Code of Conduct, this is not happening the majority of the time.  These are isolated incidents, but the monitors and administrators will step up their supervision.

Can someone tell me why the sophomore class dance is being held in Lake George. That is quite a distance from Clifton Park and it will be the responsibility of the parents to drive them there and back. There are plenty of locations that are not such a long distance away.

Written by on March 30, 2017 in Grapevine

A. Yes, the dance was there last year and did fairly well. Students were asked to complete a survey about what they would like to do this year and a dance on a boat in Lake George received the most votes.
