My daughter has been complaining that her afternoon bus driver drives like a mad man. She has complained for several weeks so i went and waited at her stop to see the bus speed to our stop. We live in an area with a limit of 30mph ahe was going a good 45 and my daughter always complains about being knocked around going way too fast and coming off the bus feeling sick from being tossed around. If this does not get fixed i will call someone bigger. It is route 415p in high school east. Other children have confirmed the driver goes too fast and several kids feel sick after they get off. I dont know if she is in a rush to just get her job done but this is rediculous!!

A.  Thank you for sharing your concerns with us. It would very helpful if we had the actual date you observed this driver and if you could give us the actual location so we can look at our GPS data. At any rate, we will look into this issue and counsel the driver.

What is the point of the electronic writing portfolio that shen is making the students share with their teachers?

Written by on June 13, 2017 in Grapevine

A.  The electronic writing portfolio serves as a repository of a student’s writing in grades 6-12. It allows an English teacher to review an incoming student’s writing, gives a student a place to house best work and/or major pieces from all subjects, and is downloaded by students in June of their senior year.  Students graduate […]

I saw recently that Shen received the No Place for Hate award a couple weeks ago and i’m very confused on why shen received this award. I remember having all the parents receive an email from the superintendent during november of 2016 about an increase of bullying towards specific groups of students (race, religion, sexual preference/identity etc.). Also as a student of Shenendehowa walking within the halls and on the buses and the cafeteria, I’ve heard people using racial slurs in a way like they are daily vocab, sometimes to people who would feel offended if they were called this directly. Shen would like to think that it was a lovely accepting place for all people but its not and we definitely should not be recognized as one.

A. Thanks for your feedback. As the No Place for Hate designation stipulates, it is the goal of the district to stamp out hate and foster welcoming environments for all students and employees. It implies continuous work and improvement, not completion.

I have heard by many students that we have a safe space in our high school for praying. If this is true then why aren’t we catholics allowed to bring Christmas stuff to school if they are embracing their religion. This is not fair and should not be pointed to one specific group. Please explain why we can not show our holiday joy and cheer if they get to go in there and pray.

A. No one said that you can’t wear your holiday cheer. However, students are not allowed to decorate the district buildings for anything. This office space is not decorated.

Thank you for answering the last few comments/questions with patience and grace. I understand that this must be a particularly trying time for the Shenendehowa administration. I wonder why some students are so offended by student opinion (disregarding the profanity, which is, understandably, prohibited in a school setting). If they wanted to showcase support for the president, they had as much right as the other students to attend the art show. The banner said “draw on me”, did it not? It seems that many of the critics out there right now are receiving their “information” (dare I say “alternative facts”?) from biased news sources and do not truly grasp the reality of the situation. I’d also like to commend Shenendehowa teachers and staff for their willingness to face controversy and contradict false accusations. It’s a shame that people would generalize you as a bunch of “left leaning…liberal[s].” A public school district being tolerant of differing student opinions, races, religions, and genders? A public school district being tolerant…of the general public? What a concept. If Shen comes off as “left minded” for allowing students to express themselves, then it says just as much about the conservative ideology ¯\_(ツ)_/¯. In any case, thank you to the Shenendehowa staff and administration for another great school year!

I applaud your efforts for continuing to answer and explain over and over about the empty room available to anyone who needs to pray during the day, regardless of religion. I think you’ve made it abundantly clear.
