I would like to try out for team sports – but feel a lot of stress, anxiety and then get very depressed that I may not make the team. I feel that the practice of try-outs is a form of bullying and is disrespectful, being cut is and upsetting and traumatic event. Also, try-outs increase the stress on everyone, students trying out and coaches who make these decisions. The fear of not seeing my name on the team list is humiliating. Also—I have never heard of a coach providing meaningful feedback—aren’t we still a school that educates first and foremost?. Also–I do not see the coaches having to try out each year!! Can Shen simply have everyone who tries out make the team? I do not see the harm in that versus the psychological problems that these try-outs for sports embed in students for years to come.

A. Sorry, but that is the nature of competitive sports. It is not just a “Shen” thing.

Hi! I’m a very loyal Flynt follower and now that he has departed from his humble position, a question of mine arises. Will our new principal still utter the phrase “Make it a great day or not the choice is your?” This kept me going, kept me motivated, kept me positive. And I NEED to know if this will be in our morning announcements. Also, another key part of the morning announcements was the birthdays. This, this is also MAJORLY important to the well being of this school. These are the questions, and I’m ready for answers. -Concerned Student with a voice

A. I encourage you to meet with the new principal to discuss these concerns. You will find him to be very open to discussions with students.

Over the years, I have seen the progression of Shen being trashier and staining their reputation. When I started sixth grade I was told that a Shen graduation diploma was respectable because of the difficulty level of the Shen curriculum and environment. I am going to be a freshman and I don’t believe that anymore. Bullying is a huge issue, EVERYTHING is political, especially in sports when it comes to whose the parent of what kid, and I feel like some teachers are so overwhelmed with such a huge number of students, they wouldn’t even know some students exist if it wasn’t for the attendance sheet. What is happening to Shen? I feel like its dying…

A. Nothing has changed at Shen. It is still one of the top schools with lots of opportunities for students to succeed in many different arenas. Bullying is a concern every where and has no place in school. If you are being bullied, please talk to an adult at the school, whether it is your […]

Almost every student in Shen agrees that the High School is over populated. Any chance on doing a randomized student draft and splitting up the grades the half so there are less kids per school.

Why is the special occasion dress code so different for boys vs. girls? It is especially noticeable for events at the end of the school year, in heat and humidity. The girls can be much more comfortable in light short sleeveless summer dresses and sandals. The boys have to wear pants, shirt, tie, socks, dress shoes. What if you make the girls wear dresses that cover them neck to ankles, stockings, and dress shoes? Sounds silly? Why can’t the boys wear nice shorts, shirt, and sandals?

This is a response to the person who wrote: “This is in response to the person who wrote: “Why is the Shen pool at Gowana not open to the public during the summer. Taxpayer money is going into it’s upkeep while it sits unused for almost three months during the summer.” The pool does NOT sit unused for almost 3 months, a swim team pays to use it during the school year and the summer, and girls varsity starts in August”. So Shen builds a pool just to rent it out? That cannot possible pay for the upkeep. What was so bad about the situation before the pool why did Shen spend money on a pool (which very few students get to use). Why did Shen not spend the money on something more students would find useful.

A. During the school year all of our middle school and elementary students take swim lessons as part of their physical education classes. The Shenendehowa swim and dive teams also use the pool all year round. There are also staff swim times and community use. The Shenendehowa pool is in constant use.
