At the recent shen game on October 6th the color guard was using guns, sowards, and white flags during the halftime preformance and Several other parents and I believe that that this gives the impression that shen is indorsing military industrial complex and give students the impression that it is appropriate to bring weapons on to shen grounds. I would would like to see colorguard eliminate these inappropriate symbols and offer an apology to the shen community for this offensive display. And go back to twirling batons and waving green flags.

A.  Thank you for providing your feedback regarding your recent experience observing a Shen Colorguard performance.  Colorguard can be found in most American colleges, universities, high schools and middle schools as well as independent groups associated with sponsoring organizations like VFW posts and local churches.  Colorguards since the early 1930’s have used standardized equipment consisting […]

Why are sensitive crybabies who are scared of the cannon allowed to ruin the fun and excitement of the majority at the pep rally and homecoming game? Can’t we have a vote over whether or not to “announce” the firing of the cannon or not?

A. No one is ruining the fun. It is simple going to be announced prior to it going off.

Can Shen send out a reminder to the high school teachers about the homework policy? Please, correct me if I’m wrong. I was under the impression that homework, for every subject was graded on effort, completeness, and if it’s in on time. I did not think any other factors went in to the grading of homework. If that was the policy, I would not be having trouble with my homework grades. Let me explain, I noticed I’ve been getting a few points off of my weekly homework. I asked my teacher what I could do to improve, and I was told that I was getting points off because some of my peers were writing more than me. (Side note: I was not aware that our homework grades were based on other peoples work in the classroom, that doesn’t seem fair. Everyone works differently. if a child is putting in 100% effort, and handing it in complete and on time that’s all that should count) Anyway, so every week since that, I’ve made sure to add lots of details, accurate details, to each homework assignment. In fact I’ve never worked harder on a homework assignment, yet I’m still not getting 100s. I’m wondering if my teacher is even reading my responses at all, or if they are just too scared to give out 100s in October. It’s just frustrating getting high 90s on my tests, but then getting 1 or 2 points off my homework each week, which is adding up and bringing down my grade. Ive asked around and I know this is also a concern for other people too so that’s why I wanted to bring it to attention. Thank you

A.  The homework policy addresses the conditions under which homework may be assigned.  It does not address how or whether homework should be graded.  Students should receive feedback on their work, however, this may come in many forms such as in-class review.  All grading of student work should be against an established grade level (or […]

Why have we instituted a new grading policy at Shen, without notifying parents? Why are tests/quizzes weighted more? Is this policy in the best interests of ALL students at SHEN? This is an important issue, and should be addressed. With this new grading policy you are not giving the below and average students a fighting chance to be successful at SHEN.

A.  Student grades are a measure of their acquisition of course content and skills.  The grading policy supports student achievement and also provides opportunities for students to demonstrate their learning over time through redos/retakes.  While grades are often viewed as most important, the reality is that grades need to reflect the student’s ability to apply […]

Has shen ever considered getting certified to have IB programs be taught at the highschool?

Written by on October 24, 2017 in Grapevine

A.  The superintendent has looked into it extensively and the decision is to stick to the provision of a a wide array of AP courses which are more readily accepted by colleges and recognized as being extremely rigorous.

Who instituted the new weighted average changes? As a parent I am beyond frustrated with this new policy. My kids work really hard in school to perform well on all test/quizzes but their hard work sometimes results in a score in the 80’s. Now a grade in the 80’s, your average could drop by 10 points. Forget it, if you score in the 70’s you are pretty much done trying to raise you average in the 7 or 8 week quarter. My kids have great support at home, we work really hard with them to be successful at SHEN, but with this new weight system, it’s getting more and more difficult to be successful. This new system does not benefit all students at SHEN. How do the teachers feel about this new weight system? What is administration really trying to accomplish with this new system? School is going to be a up hill battle for some students at SHEN.

A.  The policy supports grading based on student achievement of course content and skills.  The policy also expands opportunities for students to demonstrate their learning over time such as through use of redos/retakes.  Your child is encouraged to speak with her/his teacher to discuss any concerns about how their learning is being measured and work […]

If a student feels they are transgender or gender fluid and confide this to a Shen employee what is Shen’s policy on what happens next? Is the district mandated to notify parents? Is the student referred to the contracted counselors who now work on shen campus?

Written by on October 24, 2017 in Grapevine

A.  School personnel want to ensure that all students feel safe in the school environment. Information that is shared with school personnel is confidential unless there is a safety concern. School employees may recommend further counseling to assist students in meeting their needs.
