SUBJECT: FIELD TRIPS

The Board of Education recognizes that field trips enhance the educational program by providing students with educational experiences beyond the school walls and help support the goals of the Profiles of a Shenendehowa Elementary Student, Middle School Student and Graduate.  The Board of Education supports the use of many methods of instruction to vary the experience for students. In addition, the district shall provide access to and teachers are encouraged to take advantage of opportunities available through technology, as well as the more traditional arts in education programs that serve to bring the outside world into the classroom.  Permission is required from a parent or guardian for a student to participate in a field trip off school premises.

 All Field trips shall be approved by the building principal (or his or her designee at the secondary level) and shall:

a)         Conform to criteria described in 8460R Field Trip regulation; and

b)         Align with content curriculum and objectives; District Goals, Objectives, and Action Plan; the Shenendehowa Essential Content and Competencies; and/or the New York State Learning Standards; and

c)         Provide instructional enrichment by engaging in activities that cannot be replicated or experienced through any other means within the classroom; or

d)         Celebrate traditional end-of-the- year special events at the 5th, 8th and 12th grades (in addition to many other in-school options).

Cancellation of Trips

      The Superintendent/designee may cancel previously approved field trips due to extenuating circumstances including the issuance of alerts or warnings by U.S. Department of State.
