MIDDLE SCHOOL
Posted on May 4, 2011
We offer summer school for grade 8 based on recommendations by
the counselors in math, science, social studies and ELA. It
follows the regular High School summer school schedule and
registration process.

All students have a 40-minute lunch period.
There is no recess in middle school. Teachers often work with students
during their lunch period to provide extra help or to help them get
caught up on work they owe. Students have the option of either
eating first or bringing their lunch to the classroom. If you have a
concern, contact your child’s school.

Are water bottles allowed in the middle schools?

No. When it is forecasted that it is going to be
"dangerously hot," the school administration will announce that
water bottles will be allowed.
We have numerous water fountains throughout
each building and various drinks are available in the cafeteria during
lunch. The concerns with water bottles are:
a) How do we know what is really in each one?
b) When allowed, many of the empty ones wound
up as litter in the halls - not in the garbage cans.
c) They are often thrown or played with and
could wind up hurting someone.

In the middle school,
students are allowed only four minutes between classes. Is this enough
time?

Yes, but students need to be organized and make the best use of their
time.

Is it possible for my middle school
child who eats lunch at 10:30 to have a snack later in the day? She
doesn't get home until 4:30 and is incredibly hungry.

The middle school doesn't really allow food
outside of the cafeteria. Maybe she can talk to a counselor or teacher
and see if there is reasonable solution.

What is the earliest
time in the morning that students are allowed to enter the middle
school? Is the library open before school?

Students can enter at 7:30 a.m. because that
is when the district starts providing supervision. The libraries are
open most mornings at 8 a.m. except every other Tuesday when the
middle school holds staff meetings.

What are your school
rules on students kissing in between classes at the middle school?

Public displays of affection (PDA) are NOT
allowed. If they are caught, it is broken up and, in many cases,
students are referred to the counselors and/or the assistant principal
for discussion. If a problem continues, parents are notified.
