OPEN HOUSES/PARENT CONFERENCES

The elementary parent-teacher conferences have been changed from Nov. to Dec. for the 2011-2012 school year? What led to the change, and will the conferences be held in Dec. in the future as well?

By changing the parent/teacher conference days we are better able to align with the quarters. By putting the conference days in December we have now provided the opportunity for teachers to use the report card during the conference to guide the discussions.

Elementary students do not have school on November 18 and November 19 so that the teachers may meet with parents for conferences. There aren't any spring conferences so this is the only time parents get to meet with the teacher to discuss their child on an individual basis. Is there an expectation or standard for how long each parent conference should last? Are teachers allowed to choose to have very short conferences with parents only in the morning and use the remainder of the day for something other than parent conferences? Since the days are parent conference days and not staff development days, it seems that the expectation should be that ALL classroom teachers should be required to spend the time that day reporting on student progress to parents.

While there are no specific guidelines, the singular purpose of parent/teacher conferences days is to meet with parents and share a general overview of how their child is doing in school socially and academically. Should a parent wish for more in-depth time with their child’s teacher at any time during the year, they may set up a conference through the main office or with the teacher.

Please share whether the open houses held at the elementary and middle schools are for adults only or if the school children are welcome to attend. Thanks!

Open houses are held in the evening and designed to share information about the curriculum with adults. It is not a program for students.

When did they change the parent/teacher conference for 4th graders to include the student and why? What is the purpose of having the child present during this conference?

Teachers determine their format for parent-teacher conferences. The teachers that use this format have done so for quite some time and based it on research from the Educational Resource Information Center that indicates that everyone wins- dialogue between parents and teachers improves as does the level of communication between the parents and their child.  The students gain confidence and are actively engaged in their learning.  The children fill out a self-evaluation at school before the conference.  At the conference the child shares their strengths and weaknesses.  The teacher shares the report card and responds to what the child has shared.  The parents are asked to share their views about their child's learning.  Together we create two goals with plans that the child will work on in the coming weeks.  A parent can request that a child leave the room to talk privately after the goal setting is complete.

My elementary school schedules only one Open House night during which all grade levels make their presentations? I have consistently been unable to attend all of the presentations for my elementary level children, as they are scheduled at the same time! Does the district have a policy regarding Open House scheduling.

No, there is no district-wide policy. You should contact your children's principal to discuss your concerns.
