OPEN HOUSES/PARENT CONFERENCES
Posted on July 27, 2011
By changing the parent/teacher conference days we are better able to
align with the quarters. By putting the conference days in December we
have now provided the opportunity for teachers to use the report card
during the conference to guide the discussions.

While there are no specific guidelines, the singular purpose of
parent/teacher conferences days is to meet with parents and share a
general overview of how their child is doing in school socially and
academically. Should a parent wish for more in-depth time with their
child’s teacher at any time during the year, they may set up a
conference through the main office or with the teacher.

Please share whether the
open houses held at the elementary and middle schools are for adults
only or if the school children are welcome to attend. Thanks!

Open houses are held in the evening and
designed to share information about the curriculum with adults. It is
not a program for students.

Teachers determine their format for
parent-teacher conferences. The teachers that use this format have
done so for quite some time and based it on research from the
Educational Resource Information Center that indicates that everyone
wins- dialogue between parents and teachers improves as does the level
of communication between the parents and their child. The
students gain confidence and are actively engaged in their learning.
The children fill out a self-evaluation at school before the
conference. At the conference the child shares their strengths
and weaknesses. The teacher shares the report card and responds
to what the child has shared. The parents are asked to share
their views about their child's learning. Together we create two
goals with plans that the child will work on in the coming weeks.
A parent can request that a child leave the room to talk privately
after the goal setting is complete.

No, there is no district-wide policy. You should contact your
children's principal to discuss your concerns.
