RECESS
Posted on March 10, 2011

5661-Non-Instructional/Business Operations - SUBJECT: STUDENT
HEALTH AND WELLNESS and 5661R. This is posted in the Elementary
Student Parent Handbook which goes home each September: Dr.
Marinello, the school physician, recommends that there should be
no outdoor activity (either lunch recess or regular recess) if
the ambient temperature is 20 degrees or the wind chill factor
is 20 degrees or below.

Responding to behavior that is not appropriate
may sometimes make it necessary to meet with a child at lunch. This
is done when inappropriate behavior jeopardizes other children in the
building. In those cases, the teacher, the principal or the
principal's aide will meet with the child at lunch and through recess.
This is not done routinely, but on very rare occasions. Students who
are working at a slower pace are given support during the day, however
in situations where children are routinely not completing work at
home; teachers will give up their lunch to assist students with
homework and projects not completed. This is done when all other
interventions have failed. Tesago promotes the balance of healthy
living in the wellness wheel, but we also must ensure our students'
academic success.

Koda and Acadia do not have recess but students are allowed outside
during lunch periods.
Currently, Gowana students do not go outside but it is being discussed.

Recess is held for all students when the temperature (with the wind
chill factored in) is 20 degrees or higher. On that particular day, it
was only warm enough to hold recess outdoors for grades 3,4,& 5. Rain
may cancel recess but snow does not.

This is the recommendation of our school physician: “There should be no
outdoor activity (either lunch recess or regular recess) if the ambient
temperature is 20 degrees or the wind chill factor is 20 degrees or
below.”

The guideline was set after consultation with the school physician.

On winter days we check the outside temperature and students go
outside when the temperature is 20 degrees or above. On windy
days we check the wind chill too. Wind chill does vary based on
location. Most students look forward to going outside and we know
physical activity enhances student learning.

We follow the suggested guidelines from our
school physician--Children go outside if the temperature is 20 degrees
F. or above. We try to take into account information regarding
wind-chill if available. The temperature sometimes changes from
the start of our recess periods to the final recess time so some grade
levels may go outside and others stay inside. As for dress, we
expect students to be prepared for outdoor recess daily.
Students with boots, jackets and snow pants are able to play in areas
of their own choosing (including the snow). Students w/o boots
are expected to stay in shoveled areas (basketball court, wall ball
court, sidewalk).

At this point, Twitter is just used by the district, not the individual
schools.

Why is Shen NOT closing early due to the heat
today (Tues) like all the other surrounding schools? Also, why are
some schools such as Chango still going out for recess when Skano is
not and the heat index is over 100 degrees?

When there is a heat index warning, staff is
informed to be mindful of this as students go outside for physical
education, recess, class activities or for team practice. Indoor
options for physical education and recess are recommended. If students
go outside, it is recommended that they are provided with frequent
rests and water breaks to ensure that they stay appropriately
hydrated. School closing occurs when weather impacts our ability to
safely transport students to and from school or there are major system
failures (i.e. water, electricity, plumbing).
