Heard it through the grapevine: a place for you to nip those rumors about the district in the bud...

GRAPEVINE AND WEBSITE QUESTIONS

Website

How do you enlarge the pictures on the home page?

response heading graphic
You can't. Most of those pictures can be found on the school pages in full size.

comment heading graphic

Who is the webmaster and how do I contact them?

response heading graphic

The district-wide webmaster is the Public Information Officer. However, different people are responsible for different pages. Your best bet is to look at the bottom of the page...every person who maintains a page on www.shenet.org must have their e-mail listed at the bottom of the page.

comment heading graphic

What would a student have to do to get recognized for something on the front page of the website?

response heading graphic

Have a teacher, advisor, coach or principal send it to the webmaster.

comment heading graphic

How does a team get something on the front page of the Shen website?

response heading graphic

Have the coach e-mail the information to the webmaster.

comment heading graphic

Why aren't homework, tests and projects posted on the website?

response heading graphic

That is up to the individual teacher. Many of our teachers have websites where they post homework and projects and many are beginning to use the parent portal.

comment heading graphic

When are Board of Education minutes posted on the website?

response heading graphic

Minutes are posted after they are approved by the Board of Education. They are typically approved the following month at the next business meeting which is held the second Tuesday of the month.

Grapevine

comment heading graphic

Not a question, rather a comment. I checked several of our neighboring school districts and did not see any blog sites at Burnt Hills, Niskayuna, North Colonie or Saratoga, yet people pose questions on the Shen Grapevine as if factions within the school are trying to hide information. I just wanted you to know that I appreciate the Grapevine and the Community Conversations with Dr. Robinson and all the ways that the Shen District provides transparency and opportunities for open communications. Not everyone does and you should be applauded.

Thank you.

Why aren't some questions answered on the grapevine? There's one that says kudos to the wrestling coach. is that necessary to be on the grapevine? and some questions are answered with a phone number. If i wanted to call Mr. Flynt, I would call him not post on the grapevine.

response heading graphic
Most questions that aren't answered are already posted on the archive pages. Some questions are going to require a conversation because more details are needed or the answer is just too long for the Grapevine.

comment heading graphic

Have you considered creating a separate grapevine for students from parents because it seems like students questions don't get answered while parents are blowing up the grapevine with their ridiculous comments.

response heading graphic

No.

comment heading graphic

The responses given on the grapevine are very cookie-cutter generic and bureaucratic. for the most part things are dumbed down to make the school look like its never at fault. furthermore it questions the intelligence of many students and parents who are 'misinformed'. most of these 'misinformed' parties are better informed than the public relations zombies fielding these questions, being that these people were actually present for the events in question. i am severely disappointed in the heavy slant put on the schools version of events. and thats not to mention the complete failure to address certain questions and giving answers with little relevancy to the topic. not to say this is always the case, some questions are answered effectively and accurately. its only when something is even vaguely controversial that its ignored or handled poorly. something to work on. wouldn't want to 'misinform' us any further.

response heading graphic

Because of laws, policies and regulations, many decisions within a school district are cookie-cutter, generic and bureaucratic. All we try to do is provide the reasons for various decisions (i.e. laws, policies, regulations). You can agree or disagree but it is what it is. This site is filled with controversial questions. The only time a questions is ignored is if it is totally uncivil (and this question straddles that line) or it is more of an opinion/debate (in that case a phone conversation would be more appropriate).

Is it true that some questions are changed on this to make the school look better? Because there was one question a friend of mine asked and they said that was not what they had asked.

 response heading graphic

No. Sometimes they are changed to take out bad words, or to remove name references. That is all. If a question you sent it appears differently, it may mean that more than one person asked it and I used the other person's wording.

comment heading graphic

How many questions does the grapevine get asked a day?

response heading graphic

We get about 150-200 per week.

comment heading graphic

Why are grapevine questions changed?

response heading graphic

Questions are edited if they are disrespectful or too long. Opinions may be removed.

comment heading graphic

Is the Grapevine questions ever answered on holidays or just school days?

response heading graphic

No, just normal work hours for the district office.

comment heading graphic

When did the Grapevine start?

response heading graphic

In February, 2008.

comment heading graphic

Are Grapevine questions ever answered over the weekend?

response heading graphic

No.

comment heading graphic

How often are questions answered on the Grapevine?

response heading graphic

As often as possible.

comment heading graphic

I was just wondering, who provides the answers to the questions on this page?

response heading graphic

The questions go to the district's public information office. The PI Officer determines who could best answer the question and e-mails the question to that person. Once, the PIO receives the answer it is posted (that is why some responses take longer than others).

comment heading graphic

Is the grapevine really a positive tool for communication?  It seems to encourage complaining and disrespect for professionals.  I will not let my child read the postings here as many have a complete lack of respect for adults we have taught him to 100% respect.

response heading graphic

The purpose of the grapevine is to reduce the “ballpark” chatter and provide a place for people to get accurate answers. It provides anonymity so that people can feel comfortable coming directly to this district’s information source rather than getting the information from their neighbor or rumor mill which is frequently inaccurate. We try our best to modify the questions to make them less confrontational and/or more respectful while still conveying the meaning of the sender.
