In an effort to improve communications the
district has created this format to provide people with a place to get
answers to questions and to address rumors and inaccurate information
that sometimes circulate through the community.
NOT ALL QUESTIONS WILL BE ANSWERED. And, it
may take some time to get answers to certain questions.
For individual or private concerns, you
should contact the school or district office by phone. We will not
answer comments about specific individuals by name.
However, for issues that we think impact a
number of people in the community, we will provide a response on this
page for all to see. Please submit your comments and/or questions in
the white box on the right. Questions will be posted on this page for
a couple of days, then moved to an archive page or deleted.
Questions are e-mailed to the district's public information office.
The PI Officer determines who could best answer the question and
directs the question to that person. Once, the PIO receives the answer
it is posted.
Please check the archives on the right to see if a question on your
topic has already been answered or to search the entire grapevine for
previously asked questions, enter a keyword/topic below:
We are in the process of creating an Grapevine Questions A-Z
page so that it is easier to search topic areas.

Before the question is asked why is Acadia different...they are three
different middle schools and that is a building level decision.

It is true that all high school students are required to make up any
missed classes, whether it is an absence, an unprepared, a field trip,
or a medical excuse. This is a requirement per NYSED which coincides
with the requirement that all students in the state of NY pass 8
semesters of PE in order to graduate. When a student make’s up the missed
PE class they will engage in the activity that the particular class is
doing at that time. If the class is running on that day then the student
may very well have to run in order to make up that class. However, it is
not our intent to have students run every time they make up a class and
many students do not have to do this. During certain units, such as golf
and/or tennis, it is difficult to have students join for one class
period for a make-up. We have a limited number of tennis courts and can
only accommodate 24 students. Also, golf is a sport which requires a
great deal of instruction in order to be successful as well as safe. It
is nearly impossible to have a student that has not been in the golf
unit since the first day join in during lesson 5. That compromises the
safety for that student as well as all others. During these situations
we may have students walk around the outside of the tennis courts to
gain make-up credit.

No one likes paying taxes. You could think of it as the cost to send
your children to school. Think about it this way: a home assessed at
$200,000 pays approximately $6,000 in taxes. Students are in school for
180 days. This amounts to $33 per day. If you have two children
attending school you are paying $16.50 per child per day. If they are in
middle school, they are picked up at roughly 8 a.m. and dropped off at 4
p.m. That means that you are paying $2 an hour for each child. This
doesn't take into account the fact that they may stay later for
extracurriculars, extra help or sports. When you think about it, it
costs more to take a child to a movie or buy a happy meal.

federal nutrition standards and include a choice of fruit, vegetable,
dairy, grain and protein.
In Shenendehowa Schools, despite a limited budget, we are meeting all
these requirements and going the extra mile to make school meals healthy
and enticing for students through ethnic menu selections, meetings with
student senates, catering in the class room concepts, the additions of
more fresh fruits and vegetable, recess before lunch at two of our
elementary schools and partnerships with school administrators, the
Shenendehowa Health and Wellness Council and Building Partnership Teams.
Even student favorites have become more nutritious, meatballs are
reduced fat low sodium, reduced fat cheeses are being used, whole wheat
and whole grain breads and rolls are available, pastas are whole wheat
and whole grain, additional fresh fruits and vegetables, such as kiwi,
baked potato, potato wedges, zucchini to name a few and let us not
forget the high fiber bread sticks or the pizza on whole grain crust.

Due to obvious concerns for students' safety and to protect our staff

Therefore, teachers will use the more public areas of the schools for
extra help, keep classroom doors open, etc. This is no way is meant or
understood to discourage teachers working with our students during free
periods or after school. However, teachers who are being paid to tutor
must do it offsite to avoid a conflict of interest.

Last year the Skano Wellness team worked with the academic administrator
for physical education, health, and wellness to investigate the
possibility of switching lunch and recess. The research and data clearly
demonstrated that this is a better model for students. Children do not
rush through their lunch in anticipation of going outside for recess and
they come in from recess hungry and ready to eat therefore may eat more
of their lunch. Teachers also observed the students were more attentive
and displayed less inappropriate behaviors in the afternoon if they had
recess first. Skano initially decided to try this in the fall however in
September the committee decided to wait until the nice spring weather to
implement it. That way the children would have some time to get used to
the new practice and be able to hit the ground running in September of
2010. To answer your concerns regarding coverage, that will remain the
same both in the lunchroom and on the playground. There is at least one
adult assigned to each class.
Parents will receive information about the change which will occur
shortly after testing is complete. That information will inform parents
that their children will be eating about 20 minutes later and remind
them to make sure their children have a good breakfast and have a
healthy snack to hold them over until lunch. It will also include links
to websites that parents can visit if they would like more information.
Skano will be the 3rd elementary school to make this change.

Yes they can.
Because they are acting in their role as a teacher, they would be
covered under workers comp and students are covered under the district's
insurance.

Not true. Staff pays for sporting events just like if they were to go to
events like the play, the dodgeball tournament, etc.

This is the recommendation of our school physician: “There should be no
outdoor activity (either lunch recess or regular recess) if the ambient
temperature is 20 degrees or the wind chill factor is 20 degrees or
below.”

Currently there are opportunities for students to have an instrumental
and choral experience in grades 7-8. Students in Band/Orchestra are
given the opportunity to audition for the select choral groups as well
as for the musical. Additionally, students in choir are given the
opportunity to audition for jazz band. Please contact a music teacher
for more information. And, while athletes don't have to chose between
football and basketball because they are different seasons, they do have
to chose between football and soccer.

The mandated increase in retirement costs comes from two different
agencies. The Employee Retirement System is controlled by the Office of
the State Comptroller to cover retirement expenses for civil service
employees. The New York State Teachers' Retirement System is regulated
by a state-wide board to cover expenses for certified employees. School
district's were informed that due to the loss in investments, a rate
increase is necessary. Those funds are taken directly from state aid
payments to the district, therefore the school has no choice in the
matter.

While the there are no specific laws that restrict the district from
accepting sales taxes, the decision to render any such revenues to the
district must be made by the county legislature who is authorized to
collect those revenues. It is a political process that is outside of the
legal auspice of the school board or superintendent. As for fund balance
restrictions, the amount of funds a school district is allowed to carry
over is strictly regulated by law. Conversely, towns and other
municipalities do not have similar restrictions.

Students were recommended for NCBI by their counselors or school
administration. Students were selected based on a variety of reasons
looking for a cross section of the student population. This is the
second session and there will be more opportunities for students to
attend this year as well as throughout high school. Any students
interested in attending an NCBI session should see their counselor to
express their interest and for additional information about the program.

Recess is held for all students when the temperature (with the wind
chill factored in) is 20 degrees or higher. On that particular day, it
was only warm enough to hold recess outdoors for grades 3,4,& 5. Rain
may cancel recess but snow does not.

Four laps around the track is a mile. That is measured from the inside.
The further out you go on the track, the further you will be running. If
you choose to start outside, look for the staggered start boxes so that
you know you are running a mile.

Band, Choir and Orchestra are scheduled during the school day and built
into the schedule as a class period. Students in the instrumental
program receive a weekly lesson also as part of the school day and
follow a rotating schedule. The lessons are carefully structured on a
3-4 period rotating basis to provide a balance with other academics and
avoid excessive absences from any one class.

There are two formats for sending email notifications to parents. They
either come from the district office or from the individual school.
Sometimes, if you have a student in more than one school you may receive
the email twice. In general though, we set up the messages to go out
with a "one message limit", meaning that our system scans the email list
and sends only one email per guardian not per student. If, in a two
guardian household, both guardians use the same email address then you
will get two. If you have your email set up to go to a PDF we have no
control over that. We only send email to addresses that you have given
us and are in our student information system. If you need to have you
email contacts changed please contact the district office.

You do make a good point. The January Regents week has been studied and
will continue to be looked at as the state realign the testing schedule.
However, we also use Regents week for final and midterm exams. Currently
there are over 30 exams being offered that week.

There are many ways to get answers to questions you may have including
phone calls, e-mail, or personal conversation with a staff member. If
you have a deadline these avenues would probably be a better way to get
a response. There are only a couple of reasons why questions are not
answered on the Grapevine, either they have been answered before, they
are inappropriate or the question has a deadline that already passed.

We do not freeze milk at Shenendehowa, as a district we get a fresh milk
delivery daily at all 10 of our kitchens. We do find during the winter
months that milk can come in partially frozen. This is do to the packing
of the trucks and the timing of our deliveries by the milk vender.

Students enrolled in Project Lead The Way courses, through the
Technology Department can earn college Credit through RIT. Those
students must earn an 85% average in the course and score 70% or better
on parts A and C of the final exam. Students that qualifying for college
credit are notified, in early July by the Academic Administrator for CTE.
In the notification, students will receive two letter and a RIT
registration form. The registration form must be submitted to RIT, along
with payment no later than December 31 of the current year. Therefore,
students who qualify for credit in June must send their registration
form and payment to RIT before December 31st of 2010. RIT mails out a
transcript at the end of the trimester in which the registration was
received from the student.

Instrumentalists have the option of adding chorus for the second
semester of 6th grade. This may be done with a note from the parent to
the child's guidance counselor prior to the start of the 3rd marking
period. In 7th and 8th grade students must select band, choir, or
orchestra. Instrumentalists, however, may still audition for select
choirs which meet before/after school. In grades 9-12, scheduling
permitting, students may take choir in addition to band or orchestra as
part of the regular school day.

The process for staff (school officials) is pretty much the same as
students. There are rules of conduct. When the district receives a
report of inappropriate behavior, it is investigated. If proven true,
there are disciplinary consequences. And, just like with students,
someone typically tips off the media or sends it into the grapevine and
it becomes public knowledge.

Students must have passed Algebra, Geometry A and the Integrated Algebra
exam. In addition they must have passed two years of science and passed
at least one science Regents exam.

While privacy is provided so that the
actual height and weight is not heard by others, this is not a
closed door type of activity and is usually carried out in a
large enough room so that the student and teacher are not alone.
In general, our teachers are advised not to be alone with one
student in any situation. Obviously, this is for the safety of
our students and the protections of staff members.
Posted on January 11, 2010
No. If asked, we will confirm that an
event took place, but we do not publicize when students make bad
decisions. We do not release the specifics of the investigation
and we do not release how students were disciplined (that is
protected by the Family Education Rights and Privacy Act)
Typically when the media calls they say that they received a
“tip.” That is one of the reasons we created this grapevine, to
provide a place for people to get answers instead of going to
the media.

Fitness gram is the approved physical
fitness assessment we use at Shenendehowa K-12. We no longer use
the presidential testing. The heights and weights are done where
no other students can see what is being recorded. The
information is strictly between the teacher and the student,
unless the student shares the information with others.

That has been answered before. We do not
search social networking sites. We are not the police and do not
have resources to investigate what students and/or parents are
doing outside the school day. When something is brought to our
attention, we will investigate and students would potentially be
disciplined according to our code of conduct.

Questions are usually posted word for
word (with grammatical editing). However, references to a
specific staff member are taken out. If your question was worded
differently, it probably wasn't your question. It was probably
asked by someone else in a different way. We often get multiple
questions on a particular topic.

as well as the Student Code of Conduct. This code states:
Student-athletes shall avoid any action (s) or the participation in an
activity outside of school, which might bring embarrassment or an
unfavorable view on the athlete, his/her teammates, coaches, family,
school or community. Such alleged violation (s) will be subject to

schools.
