FACILITIES and GROUNDS

Has Shen ever considered having handball courts
(a concrete wall that can be used to hit a ball against with a racquet
or by hand)? It would be great practice for tennis when you can't
find a partner. Thanks!

No. It has never been considered. I'll can
forward the suggestion to our facilities committee.

Why can't traffic lights be installed at the Moe
Road and Clifton Park Road entrances of the campus? There have been a
few accidents. Wouldn't it help with some of the congestion especially
at arrival and dismissal time. Even if they are just working during
school hours.

The school district does not have the
authority to put traffic lights on county or state roads. The district
just applied for a grant that will help develop pathways and traffic
safety issues.

Why has it taken 4 or so years for the pool to
finally be built?

When a project is put up for a vote, a
conceptual design is presented. Once approved, the actual design must
be completed by the architect, it must be approved by the NYS
Education Department, it goes to bid and then it is built. This
process typically takes two-three years. Combined with that, the
initial design of the pool came in over budget because of the rise in
the price of steel.

which ones?

Yes,
Shenendehowa facilities are available for use by community groups. For
more information, go to our

If
we continue to spend money on new uniforms and other sports equipment,
when are we going to begin fixing up the High School East Library?

It is not a competition
of athletics versus academics. The district has a long range
facilities plan that identifies and prioritizes all areas of need
throughout the district. For example a new e-library was added to Koda
and the library in Gowana was renovated this year.

When will
the middle school auditorium refurbishment be finished?

The goal is to work on it
this summer, barring any delays in approval of the plans by the State
Education Department.

Traffic & parking on campus is so congested. Are there any plans to
alleviate this big problem?

Several steps were taken
this past September, which significantly improved the flow of traffic
on campus. New turning lanes and parking spaces were constructed, new
drop-off locations were created, and new entrance/exit patterns were
developed. Further, parents are constantly being encouraged to have
students ride the school buses.

I heard
that your answer about when the new track would be complete was
incorrect and the track would be ready of use in the Fall of 2008. It
was said that the track would be taken out after Suburban
Championships and worked on over the summer. Is this correct?

No, the district is
not expected to have approval from the state education department
until this summer 2008. At that point, several months are required to
make the necessary preparations for bidding. The timeline calls for
construction to begin in Spring 2009.

Are there
any plans for work on other sporting fields besides the turf football
field?

The district
invests a significant amount of time and money on all athletic
fields. Plans are in place to complete significant work on the soccer
and lacrosse fields including new bleachers. Also, the district
constructed several fields at the new Shatekon Elementary school, with
the expectation that they will be used in the coming year.

Is the new football field going to
be built in time for next year's season?

No. It is scheduled to be complete by 2009.
Posted on February 29, 2008
Is the new football
field on hold right now because of the proposed law that puts a
moratorium on building of turf fields? If it passes, does the district
get to vote again for the field?

No. The main objective of the vote was to reconstruct the track which
is more than 40 year old. In the process of this reconstruction, the
football field would be destroyed and need to be reconstructed. The
vote authorizes the district to make "athletic field improvements all
at a cost not to exceed $3.5 million." If there is a moratorium on
turf fields, the district would pursue other alternatives to
reconstruct the football field.

To add to the temperature of the
building; why are doors open throughout the school day in the high
school in the middle of winter?

Outside doors should never be propped open in any of our schools. It
not only wastes energy but it is a safety concern as well. If you see
one that is, please tell a staff member immediately.

Why is High School East so cold?

At 5 a.m. on school days, the temperature of each room is set to 68
degrees. There is a thermostat in each room that can adjust this
temperature plus or minus three degrees. In other words, the
temperature can range from 65-71 degrees. To conserve energy, the building is set to 60 degrees
over night .

What is the district's
policy on use of the district's outdoor facilities (tennis courts,
track, etc)?

This link will take you to our
Board of Education Policy #3280. It addresses public use of all
district facilities.

Is it true that Shen has
a complicated basement system and can hold students in case of an
emergency?

No.
Posted on February 7, 2008
When will the
construction begin for the new 8-lane track and when will it be ready
to use?

The construction work is expected to begin in
the Spring of 2009 and it is expected to be completed in the Fall of
2009.
