PARENT PORTAL
Posted on April 21, 2008
Are the students going
to be able to view there grades online like parent portal?

Yes. Next year, the district will be opening a
student portal providing students with access to the student
information system.

How can I find out my
child’s grade on the NYS ELA and math assessment tests before the
fall?

Once the grading of the exams is
complete, the state sends the scores to each school district, which in
turn, mails them home to parents. The scoring of the 3-8 ELA
assessments for the 2007-2008 school year is nearly complete and
scores should go home prior to the end of this school year. We also
load them into our student information system and make them available
on the Parent Portal.

Is the parent portal
available yet for grades K-5? Will I be able to find out how my child
scored on the NYS Math Assessment?

The Parent Portal is K - 12 and has been
available to all of the district’s parents since October 2007. One of
the items a parent can see is "Assessments". This contains all scores
from the NYS Testing Program grades 3 - 8 and NYS Regents exams. The
3 through 8 testing scores are uploaded to our system after we receive
them from the state. The Regents scores are uploaded after the
conclusion of each Regents testing period (January, June & August).

Who do I contact if my
child's information on the Parent Portal is wrong?

Call the main office at your child's school.

Why can only parents
apply for the parent portal? Why can't high school students show
responsibility and independence and ask for this service themselves?

That is the next step. The first step was to
provide access to staff, then parents and, coming this spring, the
district will begin providing access to secondary students.

The Shen Parent Portal
is great! I wonder, however, why teachers aren't required to use it?

The administrators, teachers and technical
staff are all excited about the tremendous possibilities the new
parent portal presents. Since it was instituted this summer, training
on how to use the portal has been ongoing. The first big milestone was
to ensure that the faculty was trained to enter first quarter grades
so that report cards could be generated by the system.
As a district, we have dedicated a tremendous
amount of resources to provide training and technical support of this
new system. Because of this, we have seen an increase in the number of
teachers using the gradebook feature. But we are also cognizant of the
fact that it is a new process and it will take some time to fully
implement. When it comes to new technology, some people are more
proficient and comfortable with it than others. We feel that we need to
balance our exuberance for what the new system is able to do with the
need to provide staff with the time necessary for them to fully learn
and embrace it. Like the use of other technological advancements, we
anticipate that the use of the Portal by both teachers and parents
will become second nature in the coming year or so.
