If one were to
participate in a Shen sport all three seasons, is it possible to be
exempt from physical education?

We no longer allow students to be exempt from Physical Education,
regardless of the number of sports they participate in during the
school year.

At a recent girls track meet, I noticed team members trading
uniforms. Does the track team not have enough uniforms for all the
members? If so, is this due to the fact that there are no cuts made?

Uniforms for both our Boys and Girls Track
Teams have been an issue due to the large number of students who
participate in this sport. This is a sport where we do not cut, so the
number of student-athletes may be higher than the number of uniforms
that we have for members of the team. We are currently in the process
of examining our uniform replacement system to make sure that all
students have the appropriate uniforms for contests.

Why wasn't my question answered about a third baseball field and a
modified baseball team?

A third baseball field willing be coming
online in the Spring of 2010. This field is located behind the
Shatekon Elementary School. And as far a modified baseball team, the
athletic department is currently examining the feasibility of
different modified sports and their impact on the budget. We are
in the initial phases of developing a comprehensive plan for
enhancement of our modified sports programs. A couple of years ago,
funding for modified baseball, softball and soccer teams were included
in the budget but the budget was defeated.

Is it true that half of this years Freshman Baseball team is made up
of 8th grades?

No. Only 3 of the 14 members of the freshmen
baseball team are from the 8th grade.

Does the Shen High
School boys soccer team practice in the spring?

No.
Posted on April 8, 2008
I have heard that there was talk about dropping
gymnastics as a varsity sport next year and replacing it with girls
golf. Is this true? If so, why was this decision made?

No, it is not true.
Posted on April 8, 2008
I hear Cheerleading is a Sport now. What does
that mean?

That is not true. While cheerleading has many of the characteristics
of a sport, is not a recognized as a sport by the New York State
Public High School Athletic Administration.

Is it true the the
freshmen basketball coach will not be coaching next year? If so who
will be the freshman coach?

Yes, he has decided not to return to coach the
boys freshmen team next year. He has done a tremendous job with our
freshmen teams the past three years, but wishes to spend more time
with his family. A search for his replacement will be conducted during
the summer.

I know there was a
petition sent in for a Shen Full-Contact Rugby Squad. To my knowledge
nothing ever happened. I was wondering if you could enlighten us as to
what may happen?

Rugby is not a recognized as a sport by the
NYSPHSAA it would have to be a club. Students should see the high
school principal regarding this issue.

Why are athletes not
allowed to take off their shirts if they are hot when practicing for
an outdoor sport? We were allowed to last year.

Because a new code of conduct was developed
and approved changing the regulations that govern appropriate dress.
For school events (for instance, dances) and athletic practices and
contests, appropriate attire must be worn. This includes wearing
shirts at practices

Where will the football
games be held during the construction of the new field this upcoming
season?

This upcoming season will not be impacted by
the construction. The estimated timeline for construction should only
impact a portion of the 2009 track season. Most of the work will
happen in the summer of 2009 and the project is estimated to be
complete by Fall of 2009.

With sports such a
significant piece to students (and staff) at Shen, why don't we offer
a 6 p.m. late bus to athletes? It would cut down on traffic in / out
of the campus daily year round and decrease wear and tear on the
campus roads.

If that is truly the case, the concept will be
considered. In fact, this suggestion will be shared with the
transportation department.

My child has just
started track and field and he is throwing. His coach has told him he
should get a pair of throwing shoes which will help him with his
particular event. My question is why doesn't Shen provide these shoes
if they are essential to the sport?

Athletic apparel such as shoes are the
responsibility of the participant. In those occasional situation where
a student-athlete cannot afford to purchase, in this case shoes, the
athletic department looks to the respective booster club for
assistance.

Why are cheerleading and
Colorguard not considered sports? It seems very unfair that just
because the school does not want to take money from its other precious
sports, cheerleading and Colorguard get the punishments. These
athletes work just as hard as any soccer, football, etc. player does,
except they have to do numerous fundraisers to get the basic items the
school funds provide the other teams with. I just don't understand why
the school is so biased towards which activities are sports and which
are not?

It is not the
school district's decision. Cheerleading and Colorguard are not
recognized by the New York State Public High School Athletic
Association as sports. However, the district provides funding for both
through the clubs/extracurricular units. Fundraising is done by all of
our groups, athletic and extracurricular clubs.

Why wasn't the girl's
track team recognized as Section 2 champions on the website?

People/groups/teams are recognized for
accomplishments on the website when the webmaster is notified by
e-mail from the coach, teacher, principal, etc. of the accomplishment.
Posted on March 17, 2008
How many consecutive
days are sports teams allowed to practice/play? Isn't there a limit?

According to the New York Public High School
Athletic Association, during the regular season a team or individual
can only practice/play six days during a calendar week. The only time
a team or individual may practice/play more is during competition that
is considered post season, sectional or state level play.

When my child is on
varsity football, how does he go about getting his name and number on
his jersey? I heard that you could get it done if you pay for it.

There has been a long standing tradition of
allowing seniors on the football team the opportunity to purchase
their jersey with the name on the back. The specific details are
provide by the coach prior to the start of the season.

I heard
that your answer about when the new track would be complete was
incorrect and the track would be ready of use in the Fall of 2008. It
was said that the track would be taken out after Suburban
Championships and worked on over the summer. Is this correct?

No, the district is
not expected to have approval from the state education department
until this summer 2008. At that point, several months are required to
make the necessary preparations for bidding. The timeline calls for
construction to begin in Spring 2009.
Posted on March 13, 2008
Are there
any plans for work on other sporting fields besides the turf football
field?

The district
invests a significant amount of time and money on all athletic
fields. Plans are in place to complete significant work on the soccer
and lacrosse fields including new bleachers. Also, the district
constructed several fields at the new Shatekon Elementary school, with
the expectation that they will be used in the coming year.
Posted on March 13, 2008
Why don't
we have a boy's modified basketball team?

In the past, the
need for a modified level has not been a priority with certain sports
because they have such a strong youth league. However, the new
athletic director is committed to developing a multi-year plan that
will address the needs of several teams that currently do not have a
modified level.

Why must I pay for
uniforms for the girls' tennis team? It appears that all other sports
have uniforms to issue to the players each year.

The athletic department is currently looking
at its uniform replacement procedures to avoid student athletes having
to purchase uniforms for sports teams. However, some players and teams
choose to purchase their uniforms so that they can have them.

Is Shen ever going to
implement a program where student can try out for a secondary athletic
team or some thing that will allow them to play in the school sports
program other than intramurals?

Quite simply it comes down to budget
implications of running two teams (transportation, referees, uniforms,
coaches) and practice/game field space. With that said, Shenendehowa
has 34 different varsity sports programs...the highest number of teams
in Section 2.

My child went to the
selective classification on February 29, when will she know if she has
made the track team?

Selective classification only ensures that a
student is ready to tryout for a team, it does not guarantee a spot on
the team. Each sport has a different set of standards
for selective classification. These are covered with the student
athletes. If a student does not meet the standard, the coach will make
them aware of it.
Posted on February 29, 2008
Why doesn't a district
the size of Shen have a full-time athletic trainer when several
smaller school districts do? My daughter says that the wait to see the
trainer is long.

Shenendehowa currently contracts for a trainer through the Center for
Sports Medicine for 25 hours a week. The athletic department is
currently assessing the feasibility of having a full-time trainer on
staff.
Posted on February 29, 2008
Can you post records for
sports on the website (i.e. track/field records, etc)?

For a district this size with so many athletes, that would be huge
task and, at this point, we simply do not have the manpower to do it.
Posted on February 29, 2008
What sports team apparel
is available throughout the year? I know it serves as a fundraiser
when the sport is in season, but what's available yearlong from all of
the sports teams?

Teams and booster clubs are responsible for selling sport-specific
team apparel. The high school store sells "Shenendehowa" apparel year
round.
Posted on February 20, 2008
Do you have to live in
the district for a certain period of time before you can play on a
freshman, JV or varsity sports team?

To play on an interscholastic athletic team, you have to be a
registered student in the Shenendehowa School District.
Posted on February 20, 2008
Will there be night
games scheduled for spring sports? If not, why?

There will be night games scheduled for
certain spring sports. The athletic office works with other Suburban
Council schools to see which games can be played in the evening.
Posted on February 20, 2008
Why does it cost $6 at
sectional contests for interscholastic athletics?

The cost of admission to sectional contests is
determined by the Section 2 Athletic Council.
Posted on February 15, 2008
Why can't middle school
students go to most sporting events without an adult? Can they have
permission from their parent?

Unsupervised middle school/elementary students
at sporting events create a safety issue and, in the past, have
presented behavioral problems as well. That is why they must be
accompanied by an adult.
Posted on February 15, 2008
Can you be written up
for anything at a sporting event run by the school that is off of
school property? Even if the event is over? Why?

Yes. Because it is a district sponsored and
supervised event. According to the code of conduct, students are
expected to:
"Represent Shenendehowa when participating or
attending school sponsored events with the highest standards of
conduct, demeanor, and sportsmanship."
Posted on February 11, 2008
Why in a school this
size do we allow middle school students to try out for high school
sports when the opportunities are limited for current high school
students?

NYS Public High School Athletic Association
regulations allow for middle school students, if qualified through the
selective classification process, to try out for our athletic teams.

My question concerns
tryouts for sports, cheerleading, etc that are held in August. How are
we supposed to make family vacation plans when we don't know when
tryouts will be?

Tryouts and starting dates for each sport and
each season are determined by the Section II of the NYSPHSAA (New York
State Public High School Athletic Association). The section just
approved August 18 as the starting date for all Fall 2008 sports. Even
though cheerleading is not part of NYSPHSAA, we generally
encourage the coaches to follow these dates.
Posted on February 7, 2008
Is it true that
freshmen, JV and Varsity cheerleading coaches are not compensated?

No. It is done through the Shenendehowa
Teachers Association contract under clubs/extracurricular units. The
reason that it is not part of the athletic coaching salary schedule is
because cheerleading is not part of the New York State Public High
School Athletic Association.
Posted on February 7, 2008
What aren't sports
and club cancellations posted on the website?

Simply because at this point the webmaster is
not able to manage the volume of changes that would entail.
Cancellations are announced in school.
Posted on February 7, 2008
Can 7th and 8th graders
tryout for freshmen athletic teams?

Seventh and eighth grade students can tryout
to participate on an interscholastic athletic team. They must first go
through the selective classification process.
Click
here for more information about that.
Posted on February 6, 2008
Can juniors tryout for
junior varsity sports teams?

Generally juniors tryout for varsity but they
can make a junior varsity team.
Posted on February 6, 2008
Is coaching a tenured
position? How and when do the coaches change?

Coaching is not a tenured position. Every
year, the Board of Education must formally act to approve coaching
recommendations from the Athletic Director for fall, winter and spring
assignments. At Shen, we typically appoint the present staff should
they express interest in continuing and the district wants them to
continue. Coaches are paid according to the coaching salary schedule
found in the Shenendehowa Teachers Association contract.
Posted on February 5, 2008
Is it true that all Shen
department administrators had to give up their teaching and coaching
jobs?

The memorandum of agreement that was signed in
Spring 2006 created full-time administrative positions entitled
Academic Administrator (previously these were department chair
positions that were part-time administrative and part-time teaching
positions). By July 2007 all academic administrators relinquished
their teaching assignments. In addition, the MOA stated that all
coaching and extracurricular assignments had to be relinquished by
July 1, 2007. There was one exception--an MOA was signed later that
grandfathered on of our coaches in allowing him to coach until his date of
retirement.
Posted on February 7, 2008
Why was only one
grandfathered in?

Because he is the only one who requested it.
Posted on February 4, 2008

This rumor is not true. Four student athletes
qualified for the 4 x 800 relay race at the Millrose Games, an event
at which elite student athletes can qualify during the season. This
meet is not part of the indoor track schedule and therefore an
unbudgeted expense . Rather than incur the expensive cost of running a
charter or school bus ($1,000), the athletic office offered to pay
round trip train tickets for the students and their coach ($480).
However, while this option was being explored, the Track Booster Club
offered to sponsor the trip. Had this not occurred, the athletic
office would have made sure that the student athletes were afforded
the opportunity to run in this prestigious event.
