REGENTS CLASSES/DIPLOMA

What kind of diploma do students in Alt-Ed receive? Does it say on your college transcripts that you are in the program? If a student in Alt-Ed has a 95 average, do colleges look at that the same way as a regular high school student with a 95 average?

response heading graphic
Students receive a Regents diploma if they meet all of the criteria for doing so. The courses are the same, it is the instruction that is different.

I would like to know if applying the regents exam grades for math and science and making them a 5th quarter grade that is averaged in. is a NYS requirement or is this something that just Shen does?

response heading graphic
NYS Education Department makes “recommendations” about this, but leaves it up to local schools whether to count it or not. With that said, most (if not all) of the local schools, especially those in the suburban council, count the Regents Exams in Science as 20% (1/5) of the final course grade. This makes sense in courses, such as Regents Earth Science, Regents Biology, Regents Chemistry, and Regents Physics in which the state exam serves as a comprehensive final assessment.

So because there is no German or Latin regents, how will students get there advanced regents diploma if they are in Latin or German.

response heading graphic

The state is drafting regulations so schools will be able to create local exams to award Advanced Regents Diplomas.

If my son does not pass the Global Regents test, but is passing all other courses, will he be able to graduate and walk across the stage to receive his diploma next year?

response heading graphic

Passing the Global History and Geography Regents exam is a requirement for graduation. There is a safety net for students with disabilities.

Do Regents exams count for 1/5 of the final grade in all classes now or just some?

response heading graphic

It depends on the content area:

  • LOTE - 20% of the final average.

  • Earth Science - 10%, Biology, Chemistry and Physics - 20%

  • Social Studies and English - no

  • Enriched Algebra One, Algebra One and Extended Algebra One - 20%

  • All other math - no

Are they really no longer giving the math A Regents?

response heading graphic

The State Education Department has been phasing out Math A to be replaced by Algebra.  This has been a target over several years, with the District wrapping up the course for those who were caught in the transition.  The first year high school course is currently Algebra I.

If a high school student passes a course but fails the Regents exam for that course, must the student attend summer school?

response heading graphic

No, but the student will have to re-take the Regents exam if it is required for graduation.

If you are graduating this year and in order to get your advance regents diploma, do you have to have 3 years of science and pass all 3 regents?

response heading graphic

In order to get a Regents Diploma, you have to have taken and passed 5 Regents exams as follows:

  • 1 English, 2 SS, 1 Math, 1 Science. and accrued at least 22 units of credit in the appropriate areas.

  • To get an Advanced Regents Diploma, you have to have taken and passed 8 Regents exams (including the 5 for a Regents Diploma, plus 3 more) and accrued at least 22 units of credit in the appropriate areas.

  • To receive an Honors Designation with the diploma the average of all of the scores of all of the Regents exams taken by the student must be 90 or higher.

Please provide the make and model numbers of the calculators that would cost $140 each!  Also, please provided the specifications outlined by the State Education Department for the math Regents curriculum that make this particular calculator a requirement.

response heading graphic

We recommend the TI-84+. Target has the TI-84+ for $110.  If you want the upgraded silver edition it is $129.  You can find the TI--83+ many places for under $100. This is similar to the 84+ but not as powerful.  The calculators go on sale often and can be purchased for less on Ebay. Go to: http://www.emsc.nysed.gov/osa/mathre/interalg-memo07.pdf for guidelines on the new state tests mandating calculator use.

To receive an Honors Designation with the diploma the average of all of the scores of all of the Regents exams taken by the student must be 90 or higher. If a student takes a regents twice, is the higher of the two grades used in this calculation or are both grades used for the average?

response heading graphic
The higher of the two scores is used.

I am taking a Regents class. If I fail 2 marking periods but pass for the year do I still fail the class? What if I pass the Regents?

response heading graphic

The Regents may or may not be counted as part of the final average, depending on the subject. Everyone has to achieve a 65 or higher final average to receive credit for a course.
