REGENTS CLASSES/DIPLOMA
Posted on June 1, 2010
Students receive a Regents diploma if they meet all of the criteria for
doing so. The courses are the same, it is the instruction that is
different.

NYS Education Department makes “recommendations” about this, but leaves
it up to local schools whether to count it or not. With that said, most
(if not all) of the local schools, especially those in the suburban
council, count the Regents Exams in Science as 20% (1/5) of the final
course grade. This makes sense in courses, such as Regents Earth
Science, Regents Biology, Regents Chemistry, and Regents Physics in
which the state exam serves as a comprehensive final assessment.

The state is drafting regulations so schools will be able to create
local exams to award Advanced Regents Diplomas.

Passing the Global History and Geography Regents exam is a requirement

The State Education Department has been
phasing out Math A to be replaced by Algebra. This has been a
target over several years, with the District wrapping up the course
for those who were caught in the transition. The first year high
school course is currently Algebra I.

No, but the student will have to re-take the Regents exam if it is

We recommend the TI-84+. Target has the TI-84+
for $110. If you want the upgraded silver edition it is $129. You
can find the TI--83+ many places for under $100. This is similar to
the 84+ but not as powerful. The calculators go on sale often and can
be purchased for less on Ebay. Go to:
http://www.emsc.nysed.gov/osa/mathre/interalg-memo07.pdf for
guidelines on the new state tests mandating calculator use.

The higher of the two scores is used.

The Regents may or may not be counted as part of the final average,
depending on the subject. Everyone has to achieve a 65 or higher final
average to receive credit for a course.
