A team from Shen High School won the Science Bowl at GE Global Research on March 1st, earning an all-expense paid trip to Washington DC in April for the National Competition. Approximately 70 winning teams from regional competitions across the country attend. High shool students on the team are Matthew McGuffey, Harry Newman-Plotnick, Phillip Sun, Brian Amaratunga and David Luo.
The Shen Dance Team won 2nd place at UDA's Westfield College dance competition.

The High School SADD Club worked with Regina Stewart and Shen Coalition for the MADD Ribbon Campaign. This is an initiative to end distracted driving. The little cards along with the ribbons help to bring awareness that distracted driving can mean drinking and driving, texting and driving, and lastly simply being distracted by things or people around you in the car. [ ]
Congratulations to Shenendehowa High School students David Luo, Harry Newman-Plotnick, Anthony Segreto, Nicolas Vigilante and Jessica Wang for being named student finalists in the 2014 National Merit Scholarship Program. To achieve the status of finalist requires achievement in the top one percent of United States high school graduating seniors who took the National Merit Scholarship examination. This award is one of the highest forms of recognition that a high school senior can achieve.
The High School Senior Awards Night for the Class of 2014 will be on Thursday, May 22nd at 6:30 pm in High School East Auditorium.

Shen high school students went outside during physical education did a little snow shoe-ing.
The Freshman Cheerleading squad competed at the Suburban Council Cheerleading Competition on February 1st and took home the first place trophy in their division!
The American Studies Honors We The People Team won first place honors at the NYS Region 3 competition Saturday, February 1st held at Albany Law School. The team of 27 Honor students from Ms. Crump & Ms. Quinn's American Studies defeated 2nd place Clarkstown High School South from West Nyack to advance to the prestigious New York State Competition on Saturday, March 1st. 
Team 20 Robotics is currently working to build a robot to compete in this year’s First Robotic Competition. The Team will compete at RPI on March 14-15, RIT on March 28-29 and in the World Championships in St. Louis, MO April 23-26.
The Shenendehowa Community Coalition is looking to research the impact of alcohol advertising on youth and to help young people learn to decode advertising messages. They are inviting students and parents to participate in the BIG BOWL VOTE (BBV) 2014. Click here for more information.

Shenendehowa High School West students attended the STOP (Students Together Opposing Prejudice) Conference at Siena College. The students are members of A World of Difference Club and Freshmen Class Council. 
Section 2 Indoor Track Freshman Championships - both Shen Boys and Girls had top finishers at this meet.
Mrs. Wright, elementary teacher and literacy specialist at Shenendehowa, and her one-year-old daughter Casey recently visited Ms. Rosmarin’s Child Psychology and Development class for a child observation.

Looking for a career in Music? Come to the Music School/Conservatory and Career Information Day on Saturday, January 11, 2014 from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Koda Café on the Shenendehowa campus. The event is organized by Friends of Music of Shenendehowa and open to 9th, 10th and 11th graders, and their parents.
Applying for music programs is very different from applying to academic programs. You need to know the difference, and you need to get started early! 
High School French students use various technological tools and wireless access to work on a group presentation in Google Apps.
High School Robotics Team was awarded $6,000 from the GLOBALFOUNDRIES Town of Malta Foundation. This will cover the registration cost of one regional competition.
Spring 2014 driver’s education registration information will be available on the website on or after 1/6/14.
Students from Mrs. Cowper’s SUNY Spanish class write letters and send their picture to Guatemalan students. 
FBLA/DECA held its first Business Bonanza after school. The premise of the Bonanza was to teach business students about leadership using student-run workshops on topics such as Dress for Success, Starting a Unique Business, Branding Yourself through Social Media and Competition and Travel.

In November, Shen Tri-M Music Honor Society students attended the Upstate New York Music College Fair at the Eastman School of Music where more than 60 colleges and universities from around the country were represented. In addition the students visited the Ithaca College School of Music where they met with admissions experts and toured the campus.

branch opened on Wednesday, Oct. 23 in High School East.
The grand opening is set for10/29. The branch allows
students and staff to make deposits and withdraw cash.
Shen students will operate this one-of-a-kind branch, which the students have nicknamed The Vault, with help from CAP COM staff members. [ ]

The SFA Senate presents “Senate Swish,” for CAPTAIN, a campus wide basketball tournament. Come see the basketball skills of your current and former teachers and staff. Watch them battle it out on the court on Friday, November 15th at 6pm in the HSE main gym. Tickets are $5 a person and $15/ for a family of 4 or more. Tickets may be purchased during all lunch periods at both high schools November 12-15 or at the door the night of the event. Proceeds to help CAPTAIN. We HOOP to see you there.

HSE Language of the Media seniors welcomed Robert K. Andrea, Jr., University at Albany Associate Vice Provost for Enrollment Management, as part of their Career and College guest speakers series. 
Shenendehowa High School’s Mostly a Cappella and Chamber Choir will present a concert version of Gilbert and Sullivan’s The Pirates of Penzance on Saturday October 26 at 7:30pm and Sunday October 27 at 2:00pm in the High School East Auditorium. Tickets are $10.00 for Adults and $5.00 for Students and will be available at the door. Proceeds from these performances will benefit the choral program at the High School. [MORE]
Nicole Holehan's homeroom won "the Pledge to Graduate" contest and was treated to breakfast as part of the high school's “College Week” theme. 
In July, Shen High School English teacher Susan Burns attended the American Federation of Teachers TEACH Conference in Washington DC and met Civil Rights legend Rep. John Lewis, D-GA. John Lewis is the last living person to have given a speech at the August 28, 1963 March on Washington at which the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. gave his “I Have a Dream” speech.
Shen HS is participating in Celebrate my Drive. Log on to www.celebratemydrive.com and support Shen. Our school could win $100,000 and possibly a concert by Grammy Winner Kelly Clarkson. Anyone 14 and older, can make a safe driving commitment or support Shen once a day, every day, between October 18-26. The more safe driving commitments we make, the better chance we have. The HS Counseling, College & Career Center hosted a roundtable brunch with the Directors of Admission from the following colleges; Albany College of Pharmacy, RPI, Skidmore, Siena College, University at Albany, Sage College & The College of Saint Rose. [ ]

Congratulations to Matt McGuffey, class of 2014, for his
outstanding performance on the ACT college admission and
placement exam. Matt earned the highest possible
composite score of 36.
This is particularly significant and rare, because on average, less than one-tenth of 1% of all test takers earn the top score. Among ACT-tested United States high school students in 2012, only 981 out of the 1.66 million students earned a composite score of 36.
Shen High School students David Luo, Harry Newman-Plotnick, Anthony Segreto, Nicolas Vigilante, and Jessica Wang, have been identified as semifinalists in the National Merit Scholarship competition.

High school robotics team member, Sean Gibbons, was interviewed by reporters this summer at the Saratoga Race Track.

The calendar that was mailed home to all parents had incorrect dates for the Fall SAT and ACT Exams. Shen HS will be administering the SAT on Saturday November 2nd (not Saturday October 5 as identified on the calendar). The ACT Exam will be administered on Saturday October 26th (not Saturday Nov. 2). We apologize for the mistake.
