The College Board’s Advanced Placement Program
(AP) provides motivated and academically prepared students with
the opportunity to take rigorous college-level courses while still
in high school, and to earn college credit, advanced placement or
both for successful performance on the AP Exams. About 18 percent
of the nearly 1.7 million students worldwide who took AP Exams
performed at a sufficiently high level to also earn an AP Scholar
Award.
The College Board recognizes several levels of achievement based
on students’ performance on AP Exams.
At Shenendehowa, four students qualified for the National AP
Scholar Award by earning an average grade of 4 or higher on a
five-point scale on all AP Exams taken, and grades of 4 or higher
on eight or more of these exams. These students are: Richard
Lessard, Liam Morris, Eric Wang and Jianing Xie.
Twenty-six students qualified for the AP Scholar with Distinction
Award by earning an average grade of at least 3.5 on all AP Exams
taken, and grades of 3 or higher on five or more of these exams.
These students are: Jamila Balooch, Nathan Burrell, Robert Callen,
Laura Duclos, Christopher Ehler, Konor Frick, Michael Gao,
Jonathan Harrison, Emily Hensler, Charles Hoang, Taerim Kim, Priya
Kumar, Yekaterina Lapina, Richard Lessard, Liam Morris, Alexandra
Neuber, Jessica Petterson, John Preston, Steven Rosenzweig,
Christopher Seidl, Carl Springli, Eric Wang, Sarah Weiskopf,
Jacquelyn White, Cindy Wong and Jianing Xie.
Twelve students qualified for the AP Scholar with Honor Award by
earning an average grade of at least 3.25 on all AP Exams taken,
and grades of 3 or higher on four or more of these exams. These
students are: Nicholas Dibble, John Gamino, Taylor Hendeson, Wiebe
Kremer, Philip LaCombe, Charles McGuffey, Abhishek Mundra, Diana
Nicolaescu, Elizabeth Ramos, Christopher Schwarz, Felix Sun and
Karen Sweeney.
Thirty-two students qualified for the AP Scholar Award by
competing three or more AP Exams with grades of at least 3 or
higher on all AP Exams taken. The AP Scholars are: Lindsey Adomat,
Kenneth Angeliu, Sarah Bassett, Tara Burke, Stuart Charbonneau,
Inge Chen, William Dell’Anno, Kathryn DiMaria, Kayleigh Geel,
Jennifer Gibson, Brian Hamilton, Jennifer Harfman, Seth Hazleton,
Emma Huneck, Nicole Irving, Jacob Johnson, Christa King, Deborah
Korzun, Katelyn Leonowitz, Anisha Murarka, Mackenzie Mylod,
Brendan O’Connor, Thomas Pierson, Trevor Polidore, Kathleen
Powers, Megala Sankrith, Bridget Scanlon, Kristen Schleier, Anneka
Vanderveen, Kayla Wheeler, Michael Yee, and Yumin Yi.
Of this year’s award recipients at Shenendehowa, eleven are
current seniors: Kenneth Angeliu, Inge Chen, Konor Frick, John
Gamino, Michael Gao, Kayleigh Geel, Charles McGuffey, Megala
Sankrith, Bridget Scanlon, Carl Springli and Michael Yee. These
students have at least one more year in which to complete
college-level work and possibly earn a higher-level AP Scholar
Award.
Through more than 30 different college-level courses and exams, AP
provides motivated and academically prepared students with the
opportunity to earn college credit or advanced placement and stand
out in the college admissions process. Each exam is developed by a
committee of college and university faculty and AP teachers,
ensuring that AP exams are aligned with the same high standards
expected by college faculty at some of the nation’s leading
liberal arts and research institutions. More than 3,600 colleges
and universities annually receive AP grades. Over 90 percent of
four-year colleges in the United States provide credit and/or
placement for qualifying exam grades. Research consistently shows
that AP students who score a 3 or higher on AP Exams (based on a
scale from 1 to 5, with 5 being the highest) typically experience
greater academic success in college and higher graduation rates
than students who do not participate in AP.
The Shenendehowa High School faculty, staff and administration
congratulates these students and their families for their
commitment to education.

The Shenendehowa PEACE (Partners in Educational And Cultural Exchange) Program hosts students and teachers from France and will travel to France in the Spring. In October, Shen will once again welcome visitors from Collège and Lycée Genevoix in Montrouge, France, our exchange schools just outside Paris. For two weeks families in our community will host the students and teachers who are accompanying them. Freshmen in High School West will host thirty-three ninth grade French students, and juniors and seniors in High School East will host thirty-three French seniors. Guests attend classes and explore the region and the Northeast on field trips. Since 1995, the year the exchange between the two schools began, these multicultural experiences have increased understanding of different cultures.
Here are some photos from the pumpkin carving-pot luck-student dance held for students and their host families. The French do not celebrate Halloween, so this was a fun event for them.
In its two week Coats for Kids Drive, High
School West collected a record 208 coats. Each coat will be
dry-cleaned and donated to local families in need. The program,
which is sponsored by Fox 23 and run at High School West by the
Environment Club and the Breakfast Club, set a goal to collect 100
used coats from October 18th to October 29th. The generosity of
the Shenendehowa freshmen not only exceeded the goal by 108 coats,
but broke last year’s record of 202 donated coats.
As coats were donated they were taken to Han's Laundromat & Dry
Cleaners on Fire Road in Clifton Park. The coats were dry-cleaned
at no charge and will distributed throughout Saratoga County for
the coming winter.
The Shenendehowa High School FIRST Robotics Team, Team 20 competed against 28 top teams form the North East in the 14th Annual River Rage Post-Season competition. They competed with the robot, “Ellis” named for their beloved mentor Dave Ellis who passed away in May, 2009.
The team kept their cool and elegantly competed through double eliminations to ultimate victory with two New England veteran teams as allies. This competition was an excellent opportunity to train a new drive team and to give rookie team members a feel for what to expect at the regional competitions in March.
Shen seniors took on the juniors at the annual Powder Puff football game.
It’s already been eight weeks since school
started! Hopefully you and your child are falling nicely into the
routine of high school. At this point in the year, we would like
to highlight an important program we have available to support
student achievement.
One of our supports addresses your child’s stress about their
homework. At High School West we have our very own Homework Club.
Homework Club meets after school on Monday and Thursday afternoons
in the library. It runs from 2:50 until the late bell rings at
3:50, so students are able to take the late bus home. Homework
Club offers students the chance to get all their homework done
before they get home, with assistance if necessary. The advisors
are teachers from each subject area, plus there will be
experienced tutors from High School East, who can answer questions
about their homework or help them with studying.
Students do not have to sign up to come, and they can bring a
snack and listen to their iPods. It is both a relaxed and earnest
atmosphere. We truly hope that you will encourage your child to
take advantage of this very valuable opportunity! Please contact
the guidance office at 881-0330 ext. 62440 if you would like more
information.
Thanks for your time, and best wishes to you and your child on a
successful school year!
The new
computer lab located in the west wing at HS
East is now open. This room has 30 computers and is
available for teachers to bring their
students to
work during class.
With the integration of educational technology in recent
years, there is an increased demand for time in the computer
labs, and this room allows us to provide more access to
technology to students and staff.

expectations and was truly appreciated by the
student body, faculty and staff.
The High School Partnership Team thanks you for
all that they do for
the school!
The high school held a Spirit Rally on Friday, October 8, as part of the homecoming celebration. The Spirit Rally is a relatively new event that was begun to honor the fall sports teams. This year, cheerleaders performed a section of their homecoming dance. Then teams were announced and they ran through their signs as their chosen music played and their captains’ names, coach’s name, and current record was announced. Cheer wars were held and prizes were thrown into the winning section. There was a tug-o-War between the classes.
