CLASS OUTLINE

For topics covered see curriculum page

Textbook

The textbook for this class is Earth Science by Tarbuck.  Very often you will have assignments from your textbook, but it is not necessary to bring your textbook to class everyday. You are required to COVER YOUR TEXTBOOK.  Please do not use the “stick on” type cover.

Notebook

Organization is the key to good learning. Each student is required to have a 3-ring loose-leaf binder (at least 1.5 inch).  The binder can be used for science only or can be included with other subjects in a larger (2-5 inch binder).  It is absolutely necessary that your notebook is brought to class everyday and kept up to date. The notebook will graded each marking period in the form of a test, so you will be responsible for all material covered in class, even if you are absent.

Materials List (stuff to buy)

The following materials are needed:

Pen and Pencils

Ruler (unbreakable if you can find one)

Calculator (nothing fancy needed)

At least a 1.5 inch 3-ring binder

Dividers for binder

Lined paper

Grading

Grading is on a point basis.  Each marking period there is usually a total of 300 – 400 points.  The points accumulated are converted to a percentage and the numerical grade is recorded on the report card. Students are provided with a grade sheet that should be kept up to date.

Grade Sheet

All students are required to keep a record of their grades for each quarter on their grade sheet.  At any point during the quarter, you can figure out your grade the following way:

            1. Add up your points

            2. Add up the total points

            3. Divide your points by the total points

            4. Multiply the result by 100

Homework

You will be given homework every night.  Each homework is worth 5 points.  If you make an honest attempt and you have completed all that is required, full credit will be given.  However, full credit can only be given if the assignment is completed on time.

You may hand in homework one day late for half credit.  Homework cannot be handed in more than one day late (absences excluded).  Partial credit will be given for homework that is not completely done.

                                                                                     Attendance

Attendance will be kept track of.  If you are chronically absent, your effort grade will suffer.  If you know you are going to be absent ahead of time, (doctor appointment, lesson, etc.) tell me so you can get the work ahead of time.  If you are absent, you are expected to make up all work given in a timely manor.

Tests and Absences

If you are absent the day before a test, you are still responsible for taking the test on the test day.

If you are absent on the test day, you will take the test the day you come back.

If a test is not taken by 2 days after you come back, you will receive a zero on that test.

Labs

Labs are a requirement of the course and students cannot take the Regents Exam if they do not have the minimum number of 30 labs completed with a passing grade. We will perform 40 to 50 labs during this school year.

Labs will be worth 5 points each if handed in on time and complete. A lab can be handed in late for a failing grade (3 out of 5).  No labs will be accepted more than 1 day late. Special circumstances (absences, etc.) will be the only excuse for labs later than one day. SEE LAB POLICY

Classroom Rules

  1. Lateness – All students must be in the classroom by the last bell.  Failure to do so will result in a “yellow late slip” being filled out.  If you collect 3 yellow slips during the quarter, you will receive an office referral and most likely a detention.  Every lateness past 3 yellow slips results in an office referral.
  1. Talking – There will be no talking after the bell rings.  If you wish to speak, raise your hand and you will be called on.  Excessive talking and disruption of class will result in parental contact and/or an office referral.
  1. Unprepared – Students are to come to class everyday with a pen, pencil, calculator  and their notebook.  If you have to back to your locker for any of the above items or your homework, you will be marked as being unprepared.  If this becomes a persistent problem your grade in this class will be negatively affected.
  1. Bathroom – Each student is allowed to go to the bathroom if: (one of the following)
    1. It is an emergency
    2. It is an appropriate time in the class to ask to go (use your judgment)
    3. It is during “break time”

To go to the bathroom you need to ASK FIRST and then take the pass to enter the hallway.

  1. Dismissal – The teacher dismisses the class.. not the bell.  Class will not be dismissed until all

students are in their seats, the floor, desks, and counters are clean and all lab equipment is put back properly.
