Gowana Middle School building

Gowana is one of three middle schools located on the main campus. It opened in 1953. The three middle schools buildings are attached and share core areas such as gym, libraries, etc., however, they function as separate schools.

The Middle School Odyssey of the Mind team came in 1st place at the regional competition on March 1st at HSE. They will be going to Binghamton for the State Tournament on April 12th. Team members included Katherine Ashley, Anna Buhmann, Isabel Clubb, Isabel Dunham, Kathryn Effner and Lauren Kavanaugh. They won for the Driver’s Test Problem.

The Middle School Mathcounts Club participated in the annual regional Mathcounts Competition at the GE Research Center in Niskayuna. The club is coached by middle school teacher Jennifer Sprague and high school students Phillip Sun and Jerry Qu. Gowana was represented by Shashank Patil, Fahad Ijaz, Ian Murray and Maximilian Trauring. Congratulations to all!!!

Mr. Vinciguerra, a parent and also the Publisher of several Hudson area newspapers, talks to students on Gowana Team 6-2 about newspaper production and publishing. Through interdisciplinary studies, students will be working on creating their own newspapers, based on Ancient Egyptian life and times.

FACS teachers Jen Nicholls and Claudia Sayers as well as middle school student in Family and Consumer Sciences participated in the “Shenendehowa Quilt Project.” This is a community eMS Quiltsvent that is held annually and completes quilts for various local and national organizations.

On December 10th, eighth grader Olivia Klingbeil won Gowana's Spelling Bee. She will compete against other Capital Area winners at the Regional Spelling Bee at Proctors on February 17th. We wish her the best of luck!

Holocaust survivor and author Johanna Reiss gave presentations to all sixth grader who had read her book, The Upstairs Room. Ms. Reiss, now 81, hid from the Nazis for three years from age 10 -13. Shown on the screen are her rescuers, Johan, Dientje, and Opoe Oosterveld. All three were inducted into the Yad Vashem as heroes in 2004. Ms. Reiss signed a book for every one of the sixth grade students. Many thanks to the PTA at the Middle School.
