Shatekon Fifth Graders Travel to Latin America?* Students in Mr. Morcone’s class have been studying Latin America in many different ways this school year.  They created scrapbooks of their assigned country to go along with their fictional vacation.  The class held a Latin America gallery to display what they have learned and all of the hard work that they put into their projects.  The gallery was attended by many friends and family including: Principal Wood and Dr. Robinson.  Students did a great job!

Mrs. Burnetter's 2nd-grade class welcomed Spring by interviewing staff members about its arrival!   In class, the second graders first practiced interviewing with peers, asking clear questions and listening carefully to responses.  Following the interviews with staff, the children visited the computer lab and used PowerPoint slides to record the results.  After decorating by hand, the cheerful final products were displayed in Shatekon's hall

Middle school boundary changes - As a result of the need to balance enrollments across the three middle schools students from the various elementary schools will be reassigned. The major changes are:
  • Skano, Shatekon and approximately half of Arongen 5th graders will go to Koda for sixth grade.
  • Chango, Karigon and Orenda 5th graders will go to Gowana for sixth grade.
  • Tesago, Okte and approximately half of Arongen 5th graders will go to Acadia for sixth grade.

Students currently in middle school will remain assigned to the same school until they move on to High School West for 9th grade.

Requests to attend the same school as a sibling should be sent to the superintendent's office. Students with specialized programs may be assigned to a different middle school for that particular program. Formal notifications will be mailed to parents next week.

Shatekon's Student Council was very appreciative of the support shown for our March Green Carnation Sale.  Student Council representatives helped sell the carnations to eager Shatekon students.  All proceeds from this sale support our Shatekon Student Council and enable us to give back to our school and community through charity work, giving projects, and gifts.  A donation of $237.80 was made to the Ronald McDonald House.

Coming Up:  Student Council's next theme day will be Comfy, Cozy Pajama Day on Thursday, April 9th.

Bat talk & drawings were the topic of conversation when author Brian Lies visited Shatekon Elementary in March. For this program, sponsored by PTA’s Arts in Education, students in grades 1-4 learned firsthand how Mr. Lies created illustrations for his books Bats at the Beach and Bats at the Library. We look forward to reading his upcoming book Bats at the Baseball!

Are you Smarter than a 5th Grader? On Friday, March, 20, the Fifth Grade Activity Committee along with the fifth grade teachers held the second annual "Are You Smarter than a Fifth Grader?" contest here at Shatekon. Mr. Aley, who hosted the event, entertained the audience of adults and children alike who played along in their seats.  In addition to the contest, there was also a successful bake-sale and a plethora of items and baskets that were raffled off during the night. Among the prizes were gift certificates, books, games, and the very popular iPod touch won by one of our fifth graders whose friend purchased the tickets and entered them for him. At the end of the night, there was a three-way tie for first place so a tie-breaker round was held.  Mark Smith, a parent from Mrs. Ryan's room, was the winner when he knew that Jefferson Davis was the leader of the Confederate Army during the Civil War.  Mrs. Ryan's class will have a pizza party as their prize for having the winning parent. The night was a huge success for the fifth grade! Proceeds from the program will go towards the end of the year events such as the fifth grade trip to Six Flags in June.

Shatekon’s Drama Club – May 15th-6pm. Doo-Wop Wed Widing Hood: A 50s Musical . It’s the 1950s, hula-hoops are in high demand, and so is Little Red Riding Hood! Wise Prince Jason (winner of the Math Olympics and the Nobel Prize), Strong Prince Justin (who can bench press his own mother) and ordinary Loud Prince Frank all want to woo Red Riding Hood. So the king and queen hire the Fairy Godmother to set three tasks for the princes. Only the prince who can find the missing girl, defeat the dragon and awaken a castle visitor from her slumber earns the right to woo Wed Widing Hood… that is, Red Riding Hood! Alas, Little Red’s couch-potato parents don’t want to lose their little girl. How else will they get their cookies delivered to Grandmother? So they hire the evil queen to thwart the Fairy Godmother’s contest. Luckily, Little Red Riding Hood's two sisters—Big Green Riding Hood and Medium Purple Riding Hood—help balance out the situation. Complete with the big bad wolf and a sock-hopping ‘50s score, this adventure is guaranteed to end in happily-ever-after laughter for audiences and performers of all ages!

Congratulations to our Shatekon team for winning the Almost March Madness Tournament!  Almost March Madness was a HUGE success! In February, the PTA sponsored Almost March Madness, a basketball competition between elementary schools. Staff members from Arongen, Okte, Shatekon, Skano and Tesago played basketball to a sold-out crowd of supporters.

The program was complete with cheerleading exhibitions for each school. The event was such a success that there are plans to expand it for next year. Money raised will be used to support the PTA and our schools!  Click here for more photos of the event.

Shatekon families were truly generous in their willingness to give.  Student Council representatives helped CAPTAIN load 2 vehicles with the large quantity of donated food.  Shatekon's Student Council and CAPTAIN thank all who participated in this giving project.

Shatekon teacher, Julie Burnetter, traveled to Honduras with Heifer International and teachers across the country this summer. In her own words, here is a letter to Shatekon about her experience:

Hola! Buenos dias!

In one word, the study tour in Honduras was extraordinary! I learned so much and would definitely do it again given the chance!   All went smoothly.  I enjoyed the time very much, yet I am very happy to be home with family!

Beyond seeing poverty up close and on a scale which I never have before, what was most different for me both in rural and urban areas was easy access to safe drinking water. I don't think I'll ever view water fountains (and showers) in quite the same way and hope that I never take clean water for granted. (We were able to buy in some stores bottled water for drinking and brushing teeth, but transportation of the bottled water and disposal of the plastic are challenges for the Hondurans.)

The educators I toured with, representing most regions of the U.S., were terrific!...Also traveled with two new friends from Bolivia, South America. I thoroughly enjoyed all of their company, was immensely thankful for those who spoke Spanish fluently, and have lots of new book titles recommended by many for my summer reading!

Our time was spent in class or visiting project sites. One of my favorite days was with the indigenous Lenca people. Men, women, children walked from all around the countryside to graciously greet us. Their smiles and generosity were so beautiful!   Amazingly, we were there at the right time to observe a "Passing of the Gift" ceremony...this describes when a person has received resources such as a goat or cow or honeybees (from Heifer International) and training in caring for the animal and sustainable farming practices. That person nurtures the animal and then one day is ready to "Pass the Gift" to another needy family by giving the animal's offspring and by sharing knowledge with that community member.   To me this represents the community's self-reliance, dignity, caring, hope for better nutrition and income and a healthy future. As I watched the two women give/receive the heifer, I was choked up, close to tears. I think I will always remember those moments with the Lenca vividly. Hearing mothers and fathers tell us, "My children have milk, are stronger, and now they can learn."   That too will stay with me.

Enjoy those drinking fountains which we're so fortunate to have!   Happy Summer!

Julie
