World Languages/ENL Department K-12

Shenendehowa has an extensive program in World Languages that encompasses Languages other than English (LOTE) and English as a Second Language (ESL).

LOTE Education at Shen

At Shen, we offer languages beginning in grade 7 and our curriculum is based on the New York State Standards for the LOTE.

Learning a language other than English may begin at any time; therefore, performance standards are keyed to checkpoints, which may be measured at any point in the K-12 continuum, instead of elementary, intermediate, or commencement levels, which have traditionally implied specific grade levels. The achievement of learning standards at any checkpoint varies according to the age when students begin language study, the frequency and length of the lessons, the students’ previous experience with second language learning, and their motivation.

  • Checkpoint A is considered to be a way station en route to proficiency.
  • Checkpoint B corresponds to the level of performance that all students should demonstrate in order to obtain a high school diploma.
  • Checkpoint C proficiency corresponds to a more advanced level of performance that can be attained on an elective basis.

Middle School – Students have the opportunity to study Spanish, French, German or Latin beginning in grade 7.  The Middle School Program of Studies has more information and descriptions of the courses. Middle School Parent presentation on the LOTE program at Shen. High School – The High School Program of Studies has more information and descriptions of the courses. Students have the opportunity to study:

  • Spanish
  • French
  • German
  • Latin
  • Chinese
Graduation Requirements
  • Students who enter high school are required to have one (1) unit of credit in LOTE to earn a Regents diploma. Two years of middle school LOTE study and a passing grade on the Checkpoint A exam satisfies the minimum LOTE requirement for high school graduation. Students who do not pass a Checkpoint A Examination in Grade 8 must pass a high school LOTE course to fulfill the graduation requirement.
  • To earn an Advanced Regents Diploma, students must complete 3 units of credit in LOTE (Language Other Than English) OR 5 units of credit in Art, Music or Career Technical Education.
  • Students pursuing a Regents Diploma with Advanced Designation must pass a Comprehensive Checkpoint B Examination.
NYS Checkpoint Exams
  • Checkpoint A Exam – Is an exam that is required by the New York State and locally-developed (each school district develops their own assessment). It is typically given in grade 8 and measures is students are on schedule to meet the primary goal of meaningful communication.
  • Checkpoint B Exam – Is an exam that is required by the New York State and locally-developed (each school district develops their own assessment). It is typically given in grade 10 and measures is students are proficient in the language.

ESL Education at Shen

English as a Second Language (ESL) is a specialized instructional approach designed for students whose first language is not English. Trained and certified ESL teachers use methods, techniques and materials designed to meet the needs of Limited English Proficient (LEP) students.

The ESL program at Shenendehowa has evolved in order to better meet the needs of our English Language Learner (ELL) population. A pull-out program is in place at the elementary level, while students at the middle schools and high school attend ESL classes which are grouped by proficiency level.

The ESL curriculum is aligned with both the New York State English Language Arts Standards and ESL Learning Standards.
