February 13th- February 17th, 2012

On Friday we will be having our Latin America celebration.  Thank you for all your support in making this a wonderful experience for the children.

If you volunteered to help out there is a reminder stapled in your child's agenda.

All students will need a "Good Fit Book" and a healthy snack everyday. As a reminder from our school nurse, we have children with severe nut allergies so be sure not to bring in any foods that contain nuts of any kind (peanuts or tree nuts).Thank you.

Language Arts-Daily 5

Pretest on Monday and Test on Friday.  This week's pattern is "Prefixes re- and inter-

Reading

All students have their Good Fit Books and we are learning strategies to help us become strong  readers.  We are also building our stamina.  Our Good Fit Book logs are to be filled out every day. Your child should be reading 20 min. Monday through Thursday and once on the weekend. Your support is greatly appreciated and will lead to a successful reading experience for your child.

We have started our Book clubs your child is working with a small group of students and meeting once a week to discuss the story.  They are responsible for recording unknown vocabulary and definitions in their reading notebook as well as making an entry to share with the group.  You can ask to see their book club assignments and encourage them to do their best work.

Math

Chapter 8 "Develop Fraction Concepts"

We will continue "Mad Minute Mania." Each class we will do a test of our math facts beginning with addition and subtraction and then multiplication and division.  The students will have one minute to complete a number of problems, if they get any incorrect they will record them and need to study them at home.  We are stressing speed and accuracy. They should be able to tell you the answer automatically.  "Know your facts like you know your own name."

Students may earn 5 bonus points by completing the online practice test.  Scroll down to the bottom of the page and complete the assessment.

Social Studies-

The cold weather of the Northeast inspired us to go to a warmer climate. We are taking a break from the United States and focusing on Latin America.   This week we are putting the final touches on our books and assembling them.

Letters went home explaining our Latin America celebration which will take place on February 17th.  I will be in contact with parents who mentioned that they would like to help out during the celebration.  Thank you so much for your support during this activity, we couldn't make it happen without your support.

Science-

Mrs. Renzi's class will continue to learn about health and nutrition by studying the food pyramid, serving sizes, different types of nutrients, and how to read labels.

Mrs. DeGennaro's class will be learning about Heat and Change with Mr. Grignon.  Please check his webpage for weekly updates.
