Announcements:
Students: Don't forget that your Arongen essay and typed persuasive essay are due on Monday, May 20th.
Parents: Please remember to vote on Tuesday, May 21st in the Gowana Gym from 7:00a.m. to 9:00p.m. on the Shenendehowa School budget.
All students need a Good Fit book in their Good Fit Book Bags, a healthy snack ( no nuts - we have allergies), and a bottle of water for school each day.
Language Arts:
Spelling: Theme 5 Week 5- VCV Words
Spelling pretest on Monday and Post test on Thursday.
Any student that gets a 100% on Monday does not have Spelling homework Monday night and does not have to take the test on Friday!
Grammar: We will have a quiz on "Identifying Adjectives" in sentences on Thursday, May 23rd.
Daily Five (Reading/writing):
Listen to Reading: We will finish the book,"The Genius Files". Ahhh! We WILL FINISH IT NEXT WEEK!!!
Read to Self: All students now have a Good Fit Book and a Good Fit Bookbag (GFBB). This bag must come to and from school each day. Every student is responsible for reading 20-30 minutes a night Monday through Thursday and 20 minutes once over the weekend. I will check their Reading log every Monday to make sure they have read and have a parent initial for each night. We will practice Read to Self daily and work to increase our stamina.
Strategies we have learned: Comprehension strategies: Check for Understanding, Retell, Back Up and Reread, Making Connections, Fact & Opinion, Author's Purpose, and Non Fiction Text Features, Using Context Clues, Main Idea and Supporting Details, Summarizing, Making INFERENCES AND DRAWING CONCLUSIONS, comparing and contrasting.
We will be studying Cause and Effect for the next few weeks.
The kids are doing a great job with our new book club – "A Family Apart" about the Orphan Train adventures. Reading, written responses, and vocabulary in a packet for Chapters 7-8 are due Wednesday, May 22nd. I have been really working with them to write detailed responses using evidence from the text to support their answers.
Work on Writing: We will edit the final typed version of our 5 paragraph Persuasive Writing piece.
The 5th grade end of the year essay entitled, "What Arongen Means to Me" was assigned on Monday, May 13th. One essay will be chosen from each 5th grade class to be read at the Moving Up Day ceremony. The final copy will be due on Monday, May 20th.
Read to Someone: The students will continue to work on fluency and expression.
Word Work: The students learned how to become experts in six new Vocabulary Skill Centers. In addition, they will be working on identifying and defining new vocabulary in their new Book Clubs.
Math:
We have started chapter 7 on graphing. Next week we will work on line plots, frequency tables, scales &intervals and have a quiz on those three topics on Thursday, May 23rd.
Social Studies:
Thank you sooooo much to all of you for sending in the delicious food for our Latin America celebration. It was wonderful! Thank you to all of the moms who came in to help set up, serve, and clean up our celebration. You will be so proud of their finished books when they come home. I promised the class I would try to have them all graded by the end of this month.
Science:
We started Light. Next week we will be discussing the following terms: transparent, translucent, opaque, wavelenth, reflection, and refraction. We will also discuss the difference between natural light and artificial light. There will be a matching column quiz and a short answer on this on Wednesday, May 21st.
