Revised: February 10th for the week of February 13th - 17th
Announcements:
The Arongen Spelling Bee will be held on Friday, February 17th at 8:30a.m. in the gymnasium. Congratulations to Ben Kogan for winning our class spelling bee and Laura Hurley as our runner up!
The students all received a class list to do their Valentine cards. They must make a Valentine for everyone on the list. We will have a Valentine's party on Tuesday, February 14th after lunch. Since the students will have just eaten lunch, we will not need much food. We will be ordering pretzels and I will ask the students to bring in juice boxes and some chips/dips.
Google is holding a FREE contest for all students in grades K thru 12. Google is asking students to create a new design for the Google.com home page around a central question, "If I could travel in time, I'd visit..." This is a great opportunity for students to practice their creative and artistic abilities! The National Finalist will be awarded a $30, 000 dollar scholarship to any college of their choice, and other goodies! It is not due until March.
It is getting colder! PLEASE make sure your child has warm clothes (pants, hat, gloves) for outside recess.
Band is on Fridays so please remember to bring your instrument on Fridays!
All students will need a "Good Fit Book" and a healthy snack everyday. As a reminder from our school nurse, we have children with severe nut allergies so be sure not to bring in any foods that contain nuts of any kind (peanuts or tree nuts).Thank you
Parents: Please remember to sign your child's Good Fit Book Bag reading log. If a signature is missing, the student receives an MAS
Language Arts:
Spelling: Theme 4 - Week 4 - Prefixes - re and - inter- Pretest on Monday and Final test on Friday
The alternate spelling list has started. These students must write a detailed sentence for all 20 words on Monday showing that they understand what the word means. They are allowed to start these sentences while the other students are taking their pretest. Then for the remainder of the week (Tuesday -Thursday), they do the practice pages that the rest of the class does so they are introduced to those spelling patterns as well.
If students get a 100% on the pretest on Monday, they have no homework Monday night and they do not have to take the test again on Friday!
English/Grammar: We will finish up our unit on adjectives. We will be "spicing" up our writing by using details with adjectives! We will have a test on Adjectives on Friday, February 17th.
Daily Five:
LISTEN TO READING (READ ALOUD): We are reading our 6th book, "When You Reach Me" by Rebecca Stead
BOOK CLUBS have been AMAZING! Two groups were so loving their books that they begged me to let them finish. I was so proud of their eager enthusiasm. There is a book report that the Hunger Games A group and The Wish Stealers group will be able to begin next week after we meet. It will not be due until Friday, March 2nd. The other three groups will finish up their books after the break and their book reports will be due on Friday, March 9th. The students will be responsible for reading a certain number of pages each week in their Book Club Book, writing vocabulary words they don't know on post-it notes, defining them in their reading notebook, and writing a detailed response to one question in their packet. Here are the days I meet with each group:
Mondays = Hungers Games (A); Tuesday= Hunger Games (B); Wednesday = The Wish Stealer; Thursday= Swindle; and Friday = Al Capone Does My Shirts.
They will be given time in class during READ TO SELF to read this book. They still must have a Good Fit book as well to read.
WORK ON WRITING: We are working on a persuasive writing piece.
READ TO SOMEONE: They have been asked to read one page from their Good Fit Books at night out loud to continue to practice fluency.
Math:
We will continue to work through Chapter 9- Use Factors and Multiples. We may be able to test by Friday, February 17th, or we may wait until after the break.
Social Studies:
All Regions projects are due on Monday, February 13th. Students will be presenting their projects throughout the week.
Science
The Potter Peeps have finished learning about Heat and Change with Mr. Grignon. They will be going to Mrs. Renzi to learn about the Scientific Method Please check her webpage for updates.
Mrs. Morrow's Class: Welcome to Rocks and Minerals!
On Monday, the students will identify their rocks and minerals. On Wednesday, Mrs. Voce will be coming in to show them how to make some special "rock" bracelets.
Students do not have a textbook for this unit. They will have several packets, which they must have with them at all times. We will be highlighting in the packet and taking notes in the margin. It is each student’s responsibility to listen in class, take notes, perform experiments with a partner, and review their notes nightly.
