Milky Way

·        The galaxy is 600,000,000,000,000,000 (quintillion) light-years across from end to end.    

·        The Milky Way is just one of a billion galaxies in the universe.

·        In four billion years or so, the Milky Way and the Andromeda galaxy will collide with each other.

·       The sun circles the center of the Milky Way every 230 million years. The sun is in the middle of the Milky Way.

·        The total number of stars in the universe is about 10,000,000,000,000,000,000,000 (sextillion).

·        The Milky Way is a spiral galaxy.  Every star in the spiral arms move around the center of the galaxy.   The Earth is on the outer edge of one of these spiral arms.  ******picture from book

·        The Milky Way galaxy is a medium-sized galaxy.

·        In our galaxy there are at least 200 billion stars.
