What We are Learning

 

Wampanoag Native Americans

*called Native Americans because they were first group of people to live in America

*Wampanoag means "people of the dawn"

*large group of people that lived on eastern coast of North America

*lived in houses called wetus

*moved around to find food

    spring-near rivers to fish for salmon and herring

    planting season-near forest to hunt for deer and other animals

    winter season-moved inland for protection from weather

* treated their surroundings, animals and each other with great respect

*Squanto was a good friend to Pilgrims; taught them how to plant corn and to fish. He taught them how to get sap from trees and how to make medicine from plants.

Pilgrims

* left their country, England, for freedoms/were brave

* sailed across the Atlantic Ocean in a ship named the Mayflower

*102 passengers aboard, left in September of 1620

*arrived in Plymouth, MA ________________1620.

*built one "Common House" for shelter during first winter

*1/2 died from sickness and hunger

*grateful for teachings of Squanto and other Wampanoags
