Language Arts And Math

" Be a Book Worm "

Aside from management and social skills, students also have the opportunity to receive instruction in Language Arts and Mathematics in the Management Needs classroom. This is primarily for students who may need smaller group instruction. The benefits of smaller group instruction is that it allows students to work a slower pace, and may give them the ability to have better focus during instruction which we refer to as staying on task. Students who receive instruction in Language Arts  in the Management Needs Classroom will be taught using the Harcourt Trophies Series for reading, spelling and grammar skills.  Students will also have the opportunity to study various chapter books in place of the Harcourt series on certain weeks. Students will also be instructed in math using the Harcourt series for the grade level. Some students may not be working at grade level and may be instructed at a grade level below until they feel more successful.

Writing

Students will create a writing journal which will be used each day as part of the BIG 5 in the classroom. . Students will use this journal as part of our Writers Workshop instruction in the classroom. Students will also learn the basics of "how to write" in paragraph format in a clear way. They will be asked each week to write a new paragraph, sometimes two or three on various topics in various genres. This will be a homework assignment given every Monday and it will be due on Friday. This is referred to as the P.A.W. For further information on the Harcourt series , paragraph-a-week as well as to some activities please click on the links provided below.
