Math class:

We group the students by learning styles in second grade. Every class works through the curriculum at a pace that meets their needs. Groups are created in the early fall. Students may move from one class to another based on their learning styles.

Major units:
1. Addition and subtraction facts and strategies with 1 and 2 digit numbers.
2. Number Sense
    Place value:  Hundreds, Tens, Ones
    Number order:  34, 35, 36, 37  or    98, 97, 96, ____  or 57, ___ , 59
    Patterns: 1,  3,  5,  7 or 2,  4,  6,  8 or 5, 10, 15, 20  etc.
    Comparisons: < less than- 34<41, > greater than- 79>45,
                        = equal to- 68=68  
    Ordinal numbers: First, second, third, etc.
    
      Estimating: 45 rounds to 50        23 rounds to 20

3. Problem Solving
        * Solving 1 and 2 step problems
1 step problem: Andrea has 45 marbles. John gives her 21 more. How many does she
                            have in all?
2 step problem: Zoe saved 115 pennies. She gives 63 to her little brother. Zoe saves 136
                        more pennies. Now how many pennies does Zoe have?

4. Money
    * Identifying and counting coins- half-dollars, quarters, dimes, nickels, and pennies.
    * Making change.
    * Comparing amounts.
    * Making money amounts in more than one way- show 3 ways to make a dollar.
    * Making money using the fewest coins.

5. Graphing

6. Time
    * Telling time to 5 minute intervals.
    * To tell between A.M. and P.M. when telling daily events.
    * Tell the same time in many ways.

            3:45        quarter to 4        45 minutes after 3
    * Elapse time.

            Bowling starts at 2:30 and ends at 3:30. How long was bowling?
    * Understanding a calendar.

7. Fractions
    * Recognize equal parts
    * Identifying 1/2,  1/3,   and 1/4.

8. Measurement
    * Use nonstandard units to measure items.

            How long is this book using paper clips?

    * Measuring objects with centimeters and inches.
    * Understanding tools for measuring

            cups, scales, rulers, thermometers

9. Geometry
    * Identifying plane and solid figures.
    * Identifying symmetry.
    * Show the faces, edges, and corners of a solid figure.
    * Show the sides and corners of a plane shape.

10. Multiplication
    * Practice simple facts to 20.
    * Understanding how addition is related to multiplication.

        2+ 2 + 2 = 6     is the same as    3 x 2 = 6

  11. Division
    Divide 20 crayons into 4 equal groups.
