Our reading sourcebook - Harcourt
Trophies
There are 6 themes in the year. Each theme consists of 5 stories
centered around a common concept.
We use the sourcebook during whole class instruction. Second grade story
lines/themes are listed below:
Theme 1 Being Me- People learn new things about
themselves through experiences and relationships.
Theme 2 Helping Hands- People work together to
accomplish goals.
Theme 3 Our World- Discover and explore the cycles of
our world.
Theme 4 Imagine That- Learn how imagination and
creativity help people solve problems and express ideas.
Theme 5 Neighborhood News- Discover how members of a
community are connected and play a part in making the community special.
Theme 6 Travel Time- See how people expand their
knowledge as they explore new ideas and places.
Through the story we are able to teach a lot of language arts skills.
Comprehension skills:
* Making predictions: What is going to happen next?
* Comparing and contrasting (stories, characters, settings,
etc)
* Sequencing events in a story: Telling the beginning,
middle, and end of a story.
* Cause/ effect: What happened and why did it happen?
* Identifying plot: characters, setting, problem, solution of
a story
* Main ideas and details in a story
* Drawing conclusions
Grammar skills:
Identifying types of sentences-
Telling- I
like to go to the park on Saturday.
Question-
Where is my brown hat?
Exclamation-
Wow, that show was great!
Command-
Clean you room.
Capital letters- Proper nouns, beginning of
a sentence, I
Nouns- People, places, and things.
Verbs- We
run on the soccer field.
Pronouns- The girl is buying lunch.
She is buying lunch.
Word order- movies Saturday I the to went on
I went to the movies on Saturday.
Adjectives-
red shoes , sticky
fingers, cold drink
Contractions-
can't shouldn't I'm won't
he'll
Quotation marks-
"Can you come out to play?"
asked Mike.
Adverbs- The dog walked
slowly
down the road.
Possessives- Sarah's pencil
the cats' paws
Commas- I like chocolate,
peanut butter, and oatmeal
cookies.
Verb tense agreement- She
plays in the park. They
