Weekly News

Week ending Friday, September 17, 2010

Each week I will type a newsletter to keep you up-to-date on class happenings and share important information.  This section will be updated each Friday by 6:00 p.m.  At some point I will send this as an e-mail directly to the address you gave at the beginning of the year.  I hope this works for now.

Reminder...Please do not send birthday party invitations to school to be distributed to classmates.  This helps to avoid hurt feelings and distractions during our day.  If you need another copy of the Class Directory, please let me know.

The children did a super job this week learning new routines for morning work, including spelling. Tests for Week 1 went home today.

In Math news, this week we continued to review concepts from last year, including problem solving.  Think UPS-Check.  Understand, Plan, Solve, then Check.

In Social Studies news, we are wrapping up the discussion of the creation of a classroom community using the Wonderful Wizard of Oz as a model.  We talked about why school is important (our beliefs), as well as what we need to do so that everyone can meet their goal of going to third grade (our Code of Conduct).  The children made munchkins holding a gift, which is the talents, "smarts," etc. that they bring to our group to make this the special community that it is.  Stop in sometime after school and check out our back wall.

In Science news, we will be studying Monarch butterflies.  A member of Cornell Cooperative Extension will be coming at the end of the month for a second grade presentation on this topic, as well.

Be on the lookout for permission slips for our walking field trip to the Clifton Park-Halfmoon Public Library on October 15.

   Have a great weekend!
