Reading

We read the Harcourt Trophies textbook stories in order. Students are encouraged to take their books home at least once a week so they can pre-read the story at home. Comprehension/Selection tests on the story are open-book tests that are usually at the end of the week.
Students will also participate in Book Clubs where they get to choose a book and read and discuss it with a small group. Some students may have to take the book home in order to finish their reading assignment, but they will need to return it to school every day.
I recommend that students read aloud to an adult at home which will improve fluency. Asking your child questions or having them retell the story orally/writing will improve comprehension/writing skills.
