Reading

We read the Harcourt Trophies textbook stories in order. Students are encouraged to take their books home at least once a week so they can pre-read the story at home. Comprehension/Selection tests on the story are open-book tests that are usually on Thursday.
Students will also participate in Book Clubs where they will read and discuss assigned books with a small group. Some students may have to take the book home in order to finish their reading assignment, but they will need to return it to school every day inside the plastic bag along with their Reading Assignment Schedule. Most reading assignments will be due every Tuesday and Thursday. In the spring, we will use Literacy Journals.
I recommend that students read aloud to an adult at home which will improve fluency. Asking your child questions or having them retell the story orally or in writing will improve comprehension and writing skills.
