"MATH"

The Harcourt Brace Mathematics program emphasizes concepts and problem solving.  It encourages creative thinking to reach solutions.  Units include:  place value, multiplication, percents, ratios, graphing, metrics, geometry, estimation, division with two digit divisors, fractions, and decimals.

Fifth graders must know their basic facts of addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division.  These facts should be practiced with flashcards at home.

The New York State Math Test will be given to 5th grade in March, 2008.

"SCIENCE"

Our curriculum is based on the belief that hands-on experiences in science provide students with the best skills to understand scientific principles and solve problems.  Since knowledge in this field changes so rapidly, children need to learn how to find answers.  Children will learn about heat and changes, rocks and minerals, and light.

"SOCIAL STUDIES"

The Social Studies program for fifth grade focuses on North and South America.  We begin with the history of our government (the Articles of Confederation, the Constitution, the Bill of Rights, and the Amendments) and the branches of our federal government .  We will go on to cover the different regions in the United States and the countries in South and Central America.  We will also have a unit of study on Canada.

The New York State Social Studies Exam is given to fifth grade in November, 2007.
