Ms. Meehan's 5th Grade Math Class

During the school year, we will be studying many different topics in math class.  Our units include:

  • Whole Numbers

  • Decimals

  • Fractions

  •  Number Theory

  • Geometry

  • Measurement

  • Probability

  • Graphing

Recall of basic facts is very important for 5th graders.  By knowing their basic facts, students will be able to concentrate on the concepts rather than the computation.  Here are some web sites designed to help students practice and memorize their basic facts:

www.multiplication.com

www.aplusmath.com

Applying mathematical concepts to word problems is essential to understanding and applying knowledge.  Daily Math Word Problems, given during morning work, will provide students with an opportunity to reinforce problem-solving skills.  The skills and strategies that we will be focusing on this year include:

  • Logic and Reasoning

  • Using a Table

  • Working Backwards

  • Drawing a Picture

  • Using a Diagram

  • Too Much/Too Little Information

  • Equations and Word Sentences

  • Relevant vs. Irrelevant Information

Extra practice problems are available for use at home (please let me know), or you can check out these helpful websites.
