Test Taking TipsThe chapter and unit tests provided with the Harcourt series are generally divided into four sections. Part One: Multiple Choice The multiple choice questions are difficult because students need to first understand what is being asked. The answer often involves the application of knowledge rather than basic recall of facts. We will do several practice questions in class and work on reading skills to effectively understand the questions.
Part Two: Skill Application Skill pages on the tests are generally modeled after the skill pages located in each chapter. As an example: If the skill page in the chapter involves reading lines of latitude and longitude to find a location, then you can assume that this skill will be tested.
Part Three: Matching Vocabulary words (yellow highlighted words in the text) are tested by matching the word to the correct definition .
Part Four: Essay The essay generally asks students make a statement and defend that point with details from the text. We will do many practice essays in class to review topic sentences, organization of information, and prepare for the DBQ test that students will take in the Spring. I will often give students the topic (not the actual question) of the essay in advance of the test so they can focus their study time.
