ACADIA'S MRS. PLOUFF'S 7TH GRADE ART CLASS reflected on their good fortune experienced over the Holiday Break

Throughout the day I briefly surveyed each class to see who received a particular Wii gaming system over the break.  With just 128 students the estimated grand total came to a cost of 30,500.00 was spent on a particular gaming system alone.  This doesn't include the laptops, digital cameras, or Apple iTouch gifts that I also heard about.  Although students were happy and excited about returning to school and sharing their good fortune, I wanted to remind them there are always people in need.
We went on to discuss the lack of bell ringers, food drives, toy drives and so on once the gift giving season ends.  SO- I asked for the students help.  This week we will begin a Jonesville Food Pantry Food Drive that assists over 80 families in and around our district.
The remainder of the class time was spent on FREERICE.COM. The students were so motivated by our discussion the game turned into a relay competition to earn the most rice.
The art project that goes along with this topic is a paper mache decorative bowl that is symbolic of the need for food and world hunger.

  Toys for Tots Foundation

FROM KODA: During Dec., 7th grade does an annual fund raiser for Toys for Tots.

In the past they have collected over $1400., shopped for the gifts and presented them to the Marines.

Our 8th gr. FACS class runs a Holiday Shop in our cafeteria.

This year it will be Dec. 15-17.

The class runs it like a business and all proceeds go to a voted upon charity.

The staff donates the items to be sold at a modest cost to our students as gifts for their family and friends.

The gifts are wrapped for the students as well.

The Shenendehowa United Methodist Church Women's group also donates items to us for sale.

Gowana Team 7-2 made Patriotic Stockings to send overseas to our soldiers in Iraq.  The team also collected supplies to put into the stockings such as batteries, chapstick and cough drops.

Ms. Coulter and students,

I just wanted to say on behalf of the Marines of Task Force National Capital Region stationed here in Iraq, we appreciate the packages you and your students sent us. I cannot even begin to tell you how much it means to those of us stationed here to know that we have the support from individuals such as yourselves. Being so far away these gifts you sent remind us of being back in the states, and how nice it will be to return home when our job is done. Again, thank you very much for thinking about us and good luck with the remainder of your school year.

God Bless,

Cpl. Jonathon Walraven

Gowana Community Connections

As part of the seventh grade Family and Consumer Sciences (FACS) curriculum, students participate in a "Community Connections," project.  This is an opportunity for students to give back to the community and it is also part of the FACS New York State curriculum.  Every semester, students complete a different project for the community.
