IMPORTANT NOTICE

Hello parents!  I just wanted to send out a reminder about internet safety.  There has been a lot of press lately about internet predators and, specifically, “MySpace.Com”.  As a police officer (and the father of a 12-year-old girl), I suggest talking to your kids to see if they do have an account on My Space.  You’ll want to look at it to see if they are giving out too much information (i.e., full name, age, school, town, name of their sports team, etc).  Or perhaps their friends might be giving out too much information.  Make sure you sit down and tell them anyone can look at there blogs and IM’s.  If they’re giving out too much personal information, predators can use the same internet to track your child down.  Sometimes kids think talking on the internet is private…which it is NOT!  Anybody could be monitoring their activities, gathering information.  A few tips that are recommended are as follows: 1) ensuring the computer is in a common area of your home and get it out of your child’s bedroom; 2) there are computer programs sold in stores and online that can help a parent block certain types of websites and chat rooms.  The best policy is to TALK to your kids and find out what they’re doing on the internet…be proactive.
