PTA Standing Committee Descriptions
The following is a brief description of the standing committees that Okte PTA has
formed to bring programs, events and services to the families of Okte. If any of these
peak your interest in any way, please sign up to volunteer or contact the committee
chairperson and offer your help. Look for chairperson names on the
Standing Committees list.
Remember we are an all inclusive association!
- After School Enrichment
- Each January the kids at Okte have the opportunity to sign up and choose
from a variety of activities after school such as crafts, languages, computer skills
or even bowling. Read more...
- Back to School Supplies
- This is a service PTA offers to parents where they can place an order in June
for their child's school supplies to be on their desks in September.

- Book Fair Fall / Spring
- The Fall Book Fair runs from late October until the conference days on the first
Monday and Tuesday of November. The Spring Book Fair is held during the Ice
Cream Social at the end of May. Teachers encourage Okte students to take
advantage of all the good deals at both book fairs. Kids and families do a lot of
shopping for Holiday gift giving and summer reading.
- Badge Maker
- A volunteer creates Okte buttons for students to use as a form of identification on field
trips and cooperative fun day. Read more...
- Cultural Arts
- PTA sponsors many Arts in Education programs that supplement and enhance Okte student's
academic experiences. Okte teachers have great input as to which programs are the
most beneficial to their students. Read more...
- Cookie Dough/Pizza Spring Fundraiser
- More information will be available on the PTA Cookie Dough/Pizza spring fundraiser later in the year.
- Dad's Dinner Night
- This is a night where Okte Dad's shine. They organize, serve, set-up, clean-up, and
create a fun atmosphere where families can get together at Okte have a good meal
and socialize with one another.
- D.A.R.E.
- A NYS trooper comes to Okte once a week and gives a series of lessons on the dangers of drug
and alcohol abuse to the fifth grade students. At the end of the series, a ceremony
takes place. PTA volunteers set up, clean up and organizes a reception for the
students and their families. D.A.R.E. graduation will be held on January 30. More details
will be available soon.
- Fundraiser
- Our fall fundraiser is what PTA relies to fund the PTA as it carries out the plan of
work set for the year to bring programs, events and activities that are benefit

- Holiday Gift Shop
- More information will be available in the coming months.
- Hospitality
- PTA will recognize an event that involves an Okte staff member. Whether it be a happy or
a sad occasion PTA will show their support with a card or a small gift gesture.
- Kindergarten Registration/Orientation
- PTA volunteers work in aide with kindergarten teachers and the
Main Office making sure families have children properly registered and are made
aware of procedures to help students have a great start to their Okte experience.
- Landscaping and Garden Club
- Learn about plants and help maintain the Okte gardens. Read more about the Green Thumb Club.
- Math Madness
- Is a fun activity where Okte kids get involved in showing off their math skills. Teachers
encourage student participation with extra worksheets and problems of the day.
- Membership
- This is the most direct, as well as an effective way to show your support to Okte. The
benefits of being a PTA member empowers each member to be a voice in which help
bring forth the best possible education resources to every child. A PTA volunteer
gathers the membership forms, dues and distributes all membership cards to the
Okte community. Fill out your membership form today!
- Monster Mash
- A good old fashioned Halloween party with games and activities for the kids where everyone is encouraged
to dress for the occasion. Read more about the Monster Mash.
- Moving Up Day (M.U.D.)
- Volunteers set up , clean up and serve refreshments and snacks during a
reception after the fifth grade Moving Up Day ceremony in June. Fourth grade
parents are asked to run this committee since their children will be next to move up.
- Newsletter
- An essential monthly periodical that keeps families aware of activities, staff news and Okte
events. Volunteers can utilize the newsletter as a means to thank other volunteers
for their help with a program or an event. For more information on the newsletter, including

- Parent as Reading Partners (P.A.R.P.)
- This is a collaborative effort among parents, teachers and kids to
build a reading partnership not only at school but at home. The PARP program
encourages parents to read with their children for at least 15 minutes a day.
Families are asked to keep a schedule of their reading progress for a 3 week period.
The benefits of this program out weighs the commitment needed for its success.

- Publicity
- A PTA volunteer contact local newspapers and community news to make them aware of special
events that occur at Okte, request them to promote an event or even provide
pictures to appear in the local section of the newspaper.
- Reflections
- This is a program that provides an opportunity to students to use their creative talents by
expressing themselves through their own original work. A theme is given and
students are asked to interpret that theme into their work in the arts area of
literature, visual arts, photography, musical composition, dance choreography
and film/video production. Read more...
- Scholarships
- PTA provides three $750.00 scholarships to Shen seniors who attended Okte. A committee
is formed to review all applicants that apply through the counselors office at the
High School. The committee will then determine after scoring and discussing the
information received as to which three are most deserving to be the recipients of
Okte's scholarship.
- School Banking
- This program was set up for students to learn early the importance of having a savings
account. Volunteers have students filled out the necessary paperwork and then
will collect funds from students weekly to deposit into an account
that is set up especially for them. School banking will being on September 29.

- School Directory
- A PTA volunteer gathers the addresses and phone numbers of Okte students who wish
to be listed in Okte's mini phone book. Students love receiving their directory to
keep in contact with friends, homework help, and party invites.
- School Incentives
- Cut out labels or visit your local supermarket to help our school raise money! Okte participates
in Box Tops for Education, Campbell's Labels for Education, Hannaford Helps Schools and Price Chopper's
Tools for Schools.

- School Pictures (Fall)
- Volunteers help photographers coordinate the schedule for picture day. Volunteers
also make sure students have their paperwork in place, their hair in place and
smiles ready.
- School Sign
- A volunteer changes the sign at the entrance of Okte's parking lot listing Okte's monthly
activities.
- Science Fair
- Students are asked to showcased an experiment to display in which they can explain and do
an on hands demonstration of their project. The Science Fair takes place during the
Ice Cream Social in May.
- Shen Inventors
- Okte students are encouraged to use their imagination to invent something that would
help solve a problem. Inventions are put on display in the Clifton Park Center Mall.

- Special Education
- A volunteer attends meetings and brings to the PTA membership services and programs
available to parents with children who require unique needs to education.
- Staff Appreciation
- PTA does three events each year to recognize the staff of Okte. We host a
Welcome Back to School continental breakfast, a Holiday Luncheon, and an
Appreciation Luncheon in May. The staff appreciates it all and parents love to share
their culinary delights.
- Volunteer Lists
- A volunteer collects all the Volunteers Needed forms and complies the information
into a spreadsheet list in which committee chairs utilize to call for volunteers to
help with events or programs. Get the form

- Website
- A new resource available to parents to keep in touch with Okte events, articles of interests,
and downloadable forms. It takes just a click to link up to Okte PTA.
- Welcome Back BBQ
- A get together to welcome families back to a new school year. Families gather, eat
great BBQ, and catch up with one another. Always a fun start to a new school year.
