1000 BOOK KIDS CLUB
Check out our 1000 Book Kids Club
by checking out a bag of books! Each bag contains 10 books.
When a pre-K or K student is done reading (or being read to), simply
return the bag in exchange for a new one! Many children have read
all 1000 books in this fabulous collection. Simply sign up and
sign out in the Skano Lobby. For more information on this program,
or ways you can help out, call the Skano Library (881-0566).
AUDIT
Each summer three volunteers audit the
financial records of the previous year. Verifying deposits and
disbursements made by the Treasurer. Contact the Treasurer if you are
interested in serving on this committee.
AFTER SCHOOL FUN
Skano’s After School Fun program enhances
student’s education by offering fun mini-courses not included in their
existing curriculum. Classes will meet once a week for five (5) weeks
during the winter months. We need lots and lots of volunteers to make
this program a success. The kids love it!!
BACK TO SCHOOL PICNIC
Come celebrate the beginning of another fun
school year at our back-to-school picnics. Held in our playground, we
grill hamburgers and hotdogs, and ask our families to contribute salads,
chips, and desserts. It’s a great way to get reacquainted with old
friends and to start some new friendships!
BANKING
Children can deposit money once a week in the
morning into their own account at a great interest rate. Volunteers are
needed to help with this process one morning, before school each week,
on a rotational basis.
BOOK BUDDIES
Do you love to read? Do you have 15 minutes to
spare weekly? Book Buddy parents read with students K-2 to give them
that boost for better reading appreciation. Share your love of reading
with a child today! We need many volunteers to support this program!
BOOK FAIRS
The annual Book Fairs are held twice a year-in
the fall and spring. They provide students and parents with the
opportunity to purchase books at school. The Fall Book Fair is held
during the Parent/Teacher conference times, and the following two days
during school. The Spring Book Fair is held during the Ice Cream Social.
Volunteers are needed to help the children with their purchases.
BOWLING (TENTATIVE PROGRAM)
With Starburst Roller Rink closing, we had to
find a social event to replace rollerskating! We will try to reserve
some bowling dates for this school year. We will need volunteers at the
event to help things run efficiently!
CAMPBELL’S LABELS/BOX TOPS FOR
EDUCATION
Teachers help us collect Campbell’s soup labels
and General Mills box tops in the classroom all year long. At the end of
the school year, we redeem them to obtain free audio/visual equipment
for Skano, along with monies to use toward Skano activities. So, start
saving those labels! Volunteers are needed to trim and bundle labels. It
can be done at home!
CELEBRATION BOOKS
Celebrate special occasions for your child or
for a Skano staff member with the gift of a book to the Skano Library.
This is a great way to remember someone that will be enjoyed by Skano
readers for many years to come.
CULTURAL ARTS
Cultural Arts introduces children to cultural
activities in the Albany area. Programs are designed to enhance
children’s education by relating in-school studies with real-life events
either by taking the children to performances outside of Skano or by
bringing performances to Skano. Volunteers are needed during school
hours to supervise and usher the children to and from the performances.
Not only do you get to see the children’s excitement as they watch the
performances, but you get to watch the performances as well!
DOLPHIN READERS
Dolphin Readers is a reading program that
encourages children to read, independently or with others, for 15
minutes per day for 20 days each month. This program runs from October
through March. Students can also participate in a variety of
reading-oriented activities--such as celebrating Dr. Suess’
birthday/Read Across America Day, Dolphin Reader Read-ins, Pajama Story
Times, Poster Presentations of favorite authors, and other
surprises--throughout the year. Parent volunteers are greatly needed to
help support these activities throughout the year!
FAMILY CRAFT NIGHT
The Family Craft Night is an eventful afternoon
out for our Skano families. Craft booths are set up where the children
can create their own holiday gifts. It’s an opportunity for the children
to explore their creative side while encouraging fun, quality family
time. There are food booths and a bake sale also. We need volunteers to
help out at the event.
FIELD DAY
Field Day is a fun event enc-ouraging students
to participate in outside track events. Parent volunteers are needed to
walk students between the school and track field, time the participants,
and assist in supervision.
HALLOWEEN PARTY
The Skano PTA Halloween Party was extremely
popular last year- its first year! We had food, a DJ, and spooky
story-telling! We need volunteers to help as chaperones and servers.
HOSPITALITY
Throughout the year the Hospitality Committee
provides refreshments for parent functions and staff events. Parent
functions include Open House refreshments. Staff events include a Staff
Welcome-Back Breakfast, Holiday Cookie Trays, a February Soup Day, and
an End-of-Year Luncheon. Volunteers are needed for baking and serving.
Work at home or at school to help make each event a memorable one.
Hospitality is a FUN way to be involved in making Skano a warm and
friendly place to visit and work.
ICE CREAM SOCIAL
The Ice Cream Social is an annual event enjoyed
by students, families, and faculty. Along with eating ice cream sundaes,
parents and students may enjoy the Spring Book Fair, held at the same
time. Volunteers are needed to set-up, serve, and clean-up.
FUNDRAISER
Our fundraisers support the many programs PTA
sponsors. There will be several fundraisers throughout the year,
beginning with the Joe Corgi "Family Fun Night" in October.
LANDSCAPING
The Landscaping committee works to make the
outside of our school look warm and inviting. We plant flowers and
shrubs, we weed and mulch, and we trim our shrubs. Please join us in the
fall and spring for our clean-up days. This is a fun way to help and the
hours are very flexible.
LOBBY/SHOWCASE
Are you creative? Skano PTA needs you! We need
people to help maintain the bulletin boards and showcase in the Skano
Lobby! We are looking fresh ideas to welcome parents and be educational
to the students. We generally use themes for the PTA event that month
(i.e., we work with Book Fair, Dolphin Readers, etc.) Help one time only
or all year!
MEMBERSHIP
Joining PTA means supporting your children and
our terrific programs. It is a means of financial support for the many
wonderful programs PTA provides throughout the year. You volunteer to
help the PTA only if you desire by completing the Call for Help
form.
The Membership committee needs volunteers to
help enroll members and create the membership directory. Volunteers can
work at home, completing membership cards and/or typing the membership
directory. These responsibilities take place during the fall. Your help
is always appreciated.
MOVIE NIGHT
Last winter’s movie night was such a success;
we will have to have another! Please help volunteer that night to help
things run smoothly!
NATIONAL PTA HONORARY LIFE
MEMBERSHIP
This committee consists of the PTA President,
Principal and 3 other members at large to review lifetime membership
award nominations.
NATIONAL TEACHER APPRECIATION
WEEK
During teacher appreciation week, which occurs
the first week of May, this committee finds ways, both big and small, to
say thanks for making the Skano experience fun and rewarding for the
students. Help out by baking or set up/clean up.
NEWSLETTER
The award-winning Skano PTA Newsletter is
designed to keep parents informed about what their PTA and their
children are doing. We’ll keep you informed about PTA and school events,
upcoming activities, and what’s happening at the district, state and/or
national levels. So watch for our blue Skanning Skano newsletter
throughout the school year!
NOMINATING
There shall be a nominating committee
consisting of 5 members, 2 of whom shall be elected by the executive
board from its body, and 3 who shall not be members of the executive
board. The nominating committee shall nominate one person for each
office to be filled. This committee will be formed in February. Contact
the President if you are interested in serving on this committee.
PRICE CHOPPER TOOLS FOR SCHOOLS
& HANNAFORD HELPS SCHOOLS
These programs both start in
the fall. Price Chopper gives points for purchases with the Advantage
card that the school can use to get school supplies. Hannaford gives
School Dollar Certificates that can be redeemed for cash for PTA
sponsored programs. The Chairperson is in charge of distributing flyers
for both and collecting and submitting the certificates for Hannaford.
PUBLICITY
For any school event, activity, achievement, or
program you would like "publicized," call or email with two weeks
advance notice. Skano’s students love to see their pictures and stories
in the newspapers. You can submit photos and write-ups after the event.
Drop the photo, with the names of the people pictured and a brief
description of the "event," into the PTA Publicity mail folder in the
school office.
PUBLISHING CENTER
The Publishing Center provides an opportunity
for students’ creative works to be bound into individual books. Parent
volunteers are needed to type, make covers, and bind the books in either
wallpaper-covered bindings or spiral binders. All jobs can be done
conveniently at your home. This is a very worthwhile activity that
parents enjoy. Your efforts encourage self-esteem and creativity, and
improve writing skills in our children.
REFLECTIONS
Reflections is an arts program sponsored by the
National PTA. It is a theme-based program that encourages students to
use their creativity in creating drawings, taking photographs, composing
music, and writing poetry and stories. Every student is eligible to
enter, and entries are judged to qualify for regional competition.
Information is sent home in November.
SCHOLARSHIP FUND
Skano PTA awards scholarships to two deserving
members of the Shenendehowa High School senior class who formerly
attended Skano and meet specific criteria. A committee of Skano parents
and teachers selects recipients.
SCHOOL PICTURES
School pictures are a rewarding experience for
everyone. The children love to have their pictures taken and all who
help enjoy themselves. Notices are sent home prior to picture day with
helpful hints for achieving great photos. On picture day, we need
volunteers to assist children to and from their classes, fix hair,
straighten clothes, and make sure student have a great smile. If you’d
like to help during picture day, please sign up on the Call For Help
form.
SHEN INVENTORS
Shen Inventors get noticed! In the past,
several students were selected by the Jay Leno Show to display
and discuss their inventions on national television! The students
participating in this program come from all elementary and middle
schools in the Shen district. First, students are introduced to the art
and science of invention. Then, students, individually or in teams,
identify a problem, brainstorm all possible solutions, and create a
model of their invention. We display all models at Clifton Common. The
models are judged based on creativity, novelty, usefulness, and
presentation. Everybody wins!
SKANO DELEGATE TO SHENENDEHOWA
PTA COUNCIL
Two PTA members are elected to be delegates to
represent Skano at all Shenendehowa PTA Council meetings. Four meetings
are held each year. These delegates report back to Skano PTA.
STAFF RECOGNITION
This small committee recognizes significant
staff days throughout the year with tokens of appreciation.
T-SHIRTS
T-shirts, sweatshirts, and sweatpants are sold
in the fall and in the spring as a PTA fundraiser. Purchase a sweatshirt
with our dolphin logo on it in the fall and a tye-dye t-shirt in the
spring to get the most out of our offerings!
WELCOME
This committee helps with the Kindergarten
Registration in the spring, the orientation in May, and the screening of
the new kindergarten students in September. We are also here to help any
new families transferring to Skano have a smooth transition. We need a volunteer to coordinate and make
phone calls and well as those to help out.
YOUR CHILD’S ART
Your child’s very own artwork is turned into
professionally reproduced full color products, such as magnets, mugs,
and t-shirts for keepsakes. This is always a favorite fundraiser!
