And the winner is...Amber Murphy!

On May 14, 59 really excited Shenendehowa High School students waited patiently to see a billboard unveiled next to the Clifton Park Dodge World. The students from Sallie Way’s Graphic Design Class once again teamed up with Lamar Outdoor Advertising to create a billboard design addressing the issue of drunk driving. For the first time, however, the winner of the design contest was unknown until the new billboard was unveiled on the spot in front of the entire class.

This year's design was created by Amber Murphy, a senior at Shenendehowa High School East. The design encourages people to drive responsibly and also addresses the difficulty in distinguishing drunk drivers from the rest of the drivers out there by using a NY State License Plate that says “Drunk”… “If only it were this easy.” The billboard project is timed to coincide with prom and graduation season.

High School students in Sallie Way's class each come up with their own design. Then a group of Lamar employees, along with Linda and Dan Campion from the Campion foundation, judge the work and choose the one they feel is the most effective. The chosen design gets printed and installed on a 14' by 48' billboard.

On Wednesday, May 14th, high school health students will be attending a presentation by Rick Stoddard in the High School East Auditorium.
After losing his wife to cancer caused by cigarette smoking, Rick Stoddard completed a series of emotionally-charged, television and radio public service announcements for the Massachusetts Tobacco Control Program.

Rick Stoddard, author of The Burning Truth, continues his mission by speaking to youth and adults throughout American about the dangers of tobacco use and the manipulative marketing tactics of the tobacco industry. We look forward to Mr. Stoddard’s powerful message and the profound impact it can have on students’ health behaviors.

If you have any questions about this event, please contact Colleen Coletta, health teacher at High School East by telephone – 881-0310, ext. 61739 or by e-mail – colecoll@shenet.org.

Leave No Child Behind, by Annette Romano whose son attends Koda Middle School. She wrote this article for the Association for Supervision and Curriculum Development (ASCD)

My son Luke was diagnosed with cancer in August 2004, when he was a 5th grader, but since then he has never given up his fight not only to live but also to learn. At that time, I was a teacher, so when he couldn't go to school, I taught him at home. He studied for about two hours a day when his chemotherapy treatments would allow it. But that was elementary school; his teacher was flexible and free to rearrange his schedule so that he wouldn't miss his hands-on science class, and he could skip the spelling workbook and weekly tests that weren't absolutely essential. By prioritizing his studies, Luke was able to do increasing amounts of academic work as he began to gain strength, and he eventually reentered the school.

A Video Line to Learning

Three years later, at the end of 7th grade, Luke had a relapse with leukemia and needed a bone marrow transplant. His school, Koda Middle School in Clifton Park, N.Y., and I began to make a plan for his learning because he would need to be in isolation at home for his entire 8th grade year. At Luke's 504 planning committee meeting (for accommodating students with disabilities in accordance with the law), I requested that we explore the idea of videoconferencing as a solution to Luke's being homebound. Click here to read the rest of the article.

On May 20, residents will vote on
2008-09 budget that has lowest spending increase in several years. Keeping in mind that people are struggling with the increase in the cost of food and gas, district officials have proposed a budget that carries the lowest spending increase in the past several years. Total tax impact of the $146 million budget is 3.69%. Reductions of $1.5 million were made to the first draft of the budget in an effort to be mindful of current economic situation and to lower the impact on taxpayers. Despite this, district officials were able to maintain all current programs and services and include new funding for some key areas. Click here for a summary. Click here for a copy of the newsletter with more indept information.

Three vie for two seats on Shenendehowa's Board of Education on May 20. Each seat carries a three-year term. The two seats are currently held by Mary Wiggins who is seeking re-election and Charles Huff who has decided not to seek re-election. The candidates are:

  • Mary Blaauboer
  • Erin Wallace
  • Mary Wiggins

arrow bullet Shenendehowa unveils two new ways to improve communications with the community:
  1. The district has established an after-hours number, 371-4004, for people to call when there  is a situation after hours that needs attention. People can also use this line to share information about a particular situation or safety concern that needs to be addressed quickly. The person will be asked to leave a message. Please be aware that the telephone number is identified, blocked calls will not be accepted. This is not a substitute for calling 911 for emergencies.
