The Common Core Standards are learning standards for preschool through 12th grade. These standards include what students are expected to learn at each grade level.
The Common Core Standards were created to build a foundation for college and career readiness. The Common Core Standards also have a specific goal of increasing vocabulary at all levels. Here is a quick video of a teacher explaining how she introduces new vocabulary words.

The Fountas and Pinnell Benchmark Reading Assessment is an assessment that will be used now in grades Kgn-5 beginning in the 2013-14 school year. This is an informal assessment to find a student’s reading level on a scale of A-Z. Students are assessed at least 2 times a year by their teacher. This reading level then helps students to pick appropriate books. We like to encourage students to look at a range of levels around their own level rather than just one specific level. It is always good to "stretch."
