Office 2007 - As some of you may have noticed, Office 2007 is now available through Shenapps. Office 2007 will replace Office 2003 starting in Sept. 2010.  If when using Office 2007 it is slow or unresponsive please send a Lead Teacher an email so we can let IMS know. Training and support for Office 2007 will be available during the 2009-2010 school year.

Webpage Refresher

9:00-3:00

Over the course of the next year, the district will be slowly rolling out an internal Shen website called InsideShen. InsideShen is an intranet or website only accessible to staff with a valid network login. This website will help facilitate collaboration between all Shen staff members.  The range of resources available on InsideShen will initially be limited. The District Office has already begun adding resources. As training and testing are completed for different user groups, more content will be made available.

Improved Network Security

In an effort to improve network security IMS has implemented three minor changes to user procedures. These changes were communicated by IMS via a List-Shen email.

1.  SCREEN SAVER (Staff Network) - If a teacher logins and does not use the station (no mouse or keyboard activity) for 15 minutes a screen saver will activate and require the user to reenter their password before being able to get back to the desktop. All programs and files will be open and useable as when you left the computer and the login time is not the same as at startup. This is simple a measure to avoid students being able to access teacher files and websites. Note if a different teacher logs in when the screensaver is active it will close the other teachers files and drives.

2.  NO STUDENTS ON STAFF COMPUTERS (Staff Network) - This was always the intention and it was previously communicated that students should NOT be using staff machines, it now however will be enforced by the computers at login  themselves.

3.  TIMEOUT - FAILED LOGIN ATTEMPTS  (Staff and Student Networks) -
Again this is a simple security measure to stop users from guessing at passwords
repeatedly in an attempt to gain access.

To Do After Re-Imaging

When computers are re-imaged (usually in summer), some user preferences are lost. Common features you may wish to reset include:

Drawing Canvas – When inserting an AutoShape in Word, it appears on a “canvas” that makes the object difficult to manipulate. Use the Tools menu to select Options. Click the General tab. Uncheck the box for “Automatically create drawing canvas when inserting AutoShapes.”

Reading Layout – When opening a Word attachment in Outlook, the file appears in a strange view. In Word, use the Tools menu to select Options. On the General tab, uncheck Allow starting in Reading Layout.

   Storage Space

Along with many other changes at Shen this year comes an increase in user storage space.

Each individual user's F: drive space has been increased from 100mb to 2 gb. This is 20 times the previous personal storage limit.

The G:/ and S:/ drives have also seen varying increases in storage space. The storage space on the G:/ and S:/ is now allocated by Dept/Grade level folder limits and not by individual user limits.
