Class Attendance:

All students are expected to attend their respective physical education class as assigned.  Those students that have choir/band/field trip/guidance office visit, etc., scheduled during physical education class will be expected to make up class within a two week period.  Students that are absent from school the day of physical education are expected to make up class within two weeks of the date of absence.  Students that purposely miss class and decide to not attend, a referral will be written.  Consequences will be delivered from the Class Assistant Principal.  Class cuts can not be made up and credit will be lost.

Locker Room Etiquette:

Students are expected to possess a personal combination lock to secure their belongings in the physical education locker rooms.  If a lock can not be purchased, students should inform their teacher of their situation.  During class, all personal belongings should be locked securely in a physical education locker.  Students should not share lockers or give out their personal combination to other students.  Lockers should be secured and locked before, during and after class.  The physical education teacher may possess the combination for security and safety purposes.

It is required for all students to have a set of physical education clothes and sneakers available in their respective physical education locker.  Periodically, students should take their physical education clothes home to be cleaned for hygiene purposes.

Dress Code:

Students participating in physical education class are expected to dress appropriately and for the activity.  Safety and freedom of movement are important elements in proper attire.

Athletic sneakers are to be laced and tied.  Boots, slip-on sneakers and platform sneakers are not acceptable.  Athletic socks are needed for sweat absorption.  Athletic shorts or sweat pants, t-shirt and/or sweatshirts are the norm.  Half-shirts or button down shirts are not acceptable.

It is important not only for safety but for  your own personal hygiene that you have a proper change of clothes for class.  Clothing worn during school can not be worn in class.

Jewelry Guidelines:

Understanding that the jewelry guidelines are introduced at the elementary schools and consistent between each building and progressing all the way through to the high school, the expectations, responsibilities and accountabilities are greater for the high school since they are earning credit toward graduation.

The jewelry guidelines specifically state the following:

No jewelry is to be worn during Physical Education classes.  (i.e. watches, bracelets, rings, hanging earrings, body piercing).

Graduation Requirement: (NYS Mandate)

Every student in Shenendehowa High School is required to complete two credits in physical education. To accomplish this goal, a student must pass eight semesters earning a half credit per semester. The following is an excerpt from the Part 100.5 New York State Education Department graduation requirements.

4) All students shall have earned the equivalent of two units of credit in physical education in accordance with the requirements set forth in section 135.4(c)(2)(ii) of this Title. Such units of credit shall not count towards the required units of credit set forth in paragraphs (1) and (2) of this subdivision for those students who enter grade nine before the 2001-2002 school year. Beginning with the 2001-2002 school year and thereafter, such units of credit in physical education shall count toward the required total. A student who has completed the diploma requirements as set forth in paragraphs (1) and (2) of this subdivision in fewer than eight semesters, and who is otherwise eligible to receive a diploma, shall not be required to continue enrollment in high school for the sole purpose of completing the physical education requirements as set forth in this paragraph.

For more information refer to: http://www.emsc.nysed.gov/deputy/Documents/alternassess.htm

Indoor / Outdoor Facilities:

Physical Education classes are held throughout the High School East and West facilities.

At High School East, indoor classes are held indoors at the main gymnasium and the new gymnasium.  Classes will also utilize the strength and conditioning room as well as the wrestling room.  Outside facilities include ten (10) tennis courts, 6 lane 400 meter track, as well as multiple fields to support  the  physical activity programs.

High School West classes use the gymnasium at High School West for their indoor programming.  For outdoor facilities, the physical education classes utilize the track, seven tennis courts and multiple fields space.

Medical Excuses:

Students who expect to miss participating in physical education class and fulfilling their requirements will need to communicate with their respective physical education teacher.  This communication and dialogue will assist the student in understanding the expectations and fulfilling physical education requirements.

All medical excuses should be brought to the nurses office at the students respective school building.  The nurse in turn will complete a two fold carbon copy medical excuse form.  The student should then bring the form to their respective physical education teacher.

At this time, the student and teacher should communicate and discuss the expectations for the student meeting the physical education requirements. Dialogue should include activity time to be missed, class attendance, potential written assignments for credit.

A return date for physical activity may be needed from the student's physician, if the date is not on the original medical excuse.

Make-Up Classes:

Students that miss physical education class will need to make up the class within two weeks to receive credit.

To make up class, a student must receive a pre-assigned verification form from their respective physical education teacher.  The student may then report directly to any section of  physical education class.  The student will be responsible in bringing the "verification form" back to their study hall monitor to verify his/her whereabouts and to their assigned physical education teacher.

In addition, a student has to be in good standing and he/she must be assigned to a free period or study hall.  The physical education teacher has the right to approve a student's attendance in class.  The teacher must consider class size, safety issues, student behavior and conduct, etc.

The "verification form" is designed to communicate to staff members that a student has made up a physical education class.  In addition, it allows students to be responsible for their academic standing. The form is in triplicate and verifies his/her attendance in the physical education class  and credit received.

Written Assignments:

Written assignments are handled at the discretion of the host teacher for your son/daughter. Assignment value will be communicated by the teacher to the student. Written assignments will be distributed by the teacher and or from the teacher's web page. Assignments will not be used to make up classroom absences that are not caused by medical excuse.

Game Day Exemption

The exemption process has been eliminated from your son/daughters high school experience. The core components of physical education build the foundation of healthful physical activity for the rest of our lives. We value this process at Shenendehowa Central Schools and want  your children to benefit as well. Students athletes will be allowed to take "Game Day" exemption. This means that the day of an athletic competition your son/daughter will not be required to participate in class. They will still be held responsible for missed work i.e. written assessments, skill performances... The student athlete must remain with their respective physical education teacher for their class period.
