arrow bullet Built on the premise that we must strive for continuous improvement, our instructional program has undergone a complete redesign over the last several years. With input from the major stakeholder groups, the following three components were developed and used to build the instructional program. They are evaluated and updated regularly.

KEY CURRICULUM TERMS

arrow bulletDocument-Based Questions (DBQ), Grade 5 Social Studies Exam
Fifth graders are required to take a statewide social studies exam. As they start to prepare, parents will begin to hear the term "DBQ" more frequently as it relates to this exam.
DBQ, or document based questions, require students to write an essay based on information gathered from various documents.
Students must identify and explore events or issues by examining, analyzing and evaluating information typically used by social scientists and historians.
The New York state test may contain up to 8 documents including:
  • charts/graphs
  • maps
  • cartoons
  • photographs
  • eyewitness accounts
  • historical passages
  • artwork/poetry
  • artifacts

To achieve the highest level of success on the exam, student essays should:

  • Answer all aspects of the task by using the given documents and perhaps outside relevant information related to the documents.
  • Consistently use accurate data.
  • Develop ideas fully using such supporting evidence as examples, reasons, details, explanations and generalizations that are relevant and appropriate.
  • Demonstrate a logical plan of organization and coherence in the development of ideas.
  • Consistently expresses ideas clearly.

Here are just a few samples of what children should be able to do for the 5th grade social studies exam:

  • Describe the purpose of latitude and longitude and, using a world map or a globe, identify the absolute location of some specific places.
  • Cite specific examples from anywhere in the world to illustrate environmental issues (e.g. deforestation, air pollution)
  • Explain how the physical environment has affected the way people live in your community (e.g. how has it influenced choices of building materials, housing styles and types of vegetation grown?)

arrow bulletEarly Literacy Profile, grades K-2
The Early Literacy Profile (ELP) is the district wide assessment used with our K-2 students.  Using the ELP allows teachers to assess student development in the areas of reading and writing.  Depending on the grade level, students are administered the assessment anywhere from 2 to 4 times a year.  By administering the ELP multiple times throughout a year, teachers are able to monitor student progress and base instruction on the needs of their students.

Components of the ELP are: identification of letters and sounds, identification of high frequency word, reading a short story, student generated retell of the story read, and writing samples.

Teachers record information on a summary sheet which provides future teachers with a picture of the student, as a learner of English language arts.
