Spy Letters of the American Revolution

This site, from the Clements Library at the University of Michigan, provides an “amazingly complete look at the everyday intelligence operations of both the British and American armies.” The letters may be searched through their stories, their methods, a timeline, biographies, or a map.  The stories provide background contextual information about each letter; the methods describe techniques and formats.  The map provides a visual representation of the letters' travels.  Biographies and a timeline provide supplementary information for further reference.  Prints, portraits, and maps also supply additional background to the contents 
of the letters.

Letters from an Iowa Soldier in the Civil War

The letters written by Newton Scott, Private, Company A, of the 36th Infantry, Iowa Volunteers, from 1862 thru 1865 are filled with rich details of the war and the living conditions in the Union camps in Mississippi, Missouri, Iowa, and Arkansas. The letters also provide a glimpse of the personal emotions of a 21-year old farm boy uprooted from family, friends and sweetheart.

The Civil War Letters of Galutia York

This is the story of Galutia York, a 19-year old son of a farm family from Hubbardsville in Madison County, New York, who enlisted in the Union Army in 1862.  His 48 letters home are published.  He served until May of 1863 when he died in Louisiana.  He was never in a shooting battle, but the enemy he fought was just as deadly as any Rebel sharpshooter - disease.

U.S. Colored Troops: Civil War Soldiers & Sailors System

This site, from the National Park Service (NPS), contains basic facts about servicemen who served on both sides during the Civil War.  It contains the names of 235,000 soldiers who served in the United States Colored Troops (USCT). In addition to the 235,000 names, the current data includes 180 histories of USCT units/regiments and links to information on their most significant battles. Additional resources at the site include a brief history of the USCT and information and links to NPS African-American Civil War sites.

Introduction to the Christie Papers

William and Thomas Christie served in the First Minnesota Battery through June 1865 and their younger brother, Alexander, enlisted in an infantry regiment in fall 1864. All three brothers were excellent writers, and each wrote extensively while in the Army. Their letters are full of revealing observations on war, society, and contemporary politics.

This site, established by the Woodrow Wilson International Center for Scholars and part of the Smithsonian Institutes web site, contains a large collection of historical material on the governments and people on all sides of the Cold War.  Registration (free) is required to access the documents and discussion groups.  The core of the site is the CWIHP Virtual Library, a searchable collection of documents, working papers, and articles from the CWIHP Bulletin. The library covers numerous topics related to the Cold War and users can sort the documents by several methods, including keyword, subject, and geographic subject.

Battlefield: Vietnam

This is an excellent overview of the Vietnam War by PBS that 
provides a brief history of the conflict by Robert Brigham of Vassar College, a detailed timeline, information on Vietcong guerrilla tactics,

The Virtual Vietnam Archive enables one to "conduct research directly from universities, schools, libraries, and homes." Currently, the project contains over 1.5 million pages of materials online, ranging from photographs, slides, audio and video recordings, and a number of oral histories.  One particular highlight is the number of oral history audio files online here. These are drawn from a number of persons involved with the Vietnam War in a number of capacities.

Gulf War: An Oral History

This is a PBS Frontline site on the Gulf War. The information is presented in six main sections.  The first three sections are: Oral 
History
which includes information on the Decision Makers, the Commanders, the Iraqis and the Analysts; War Stories which has RealAudio and written first-hand accounts of the exploits and experiences of soldiers and pilots in the Gulf War; and Voices in the Storm is a BBC radio series on the war.  In addition there is are 
maps, a timeline, and a section on weapons used including aircraft, ground systems, munitions and space systems.
