Images and Clip Art on the Internet

Want to use images found on the Internet? First, learn what images can be used and what one can't and why, and second, learn how to save the images from the Web.  Below are two links on copyright issues concerning images and clip art found on the web.

NYPL Digital Gallery

This site "provides access to over 275,000 images digitized from primary sources and printed rarities in the collections of The New York Public Library [NYPL], including illuminated manuscripts, historical maps, vintage posters, rare prints and photographs, illustrated books, printed ephemera, and more." Searchable, or browsable by collection, such as art and literature, cities and buildings, industry and technology, and nature and science.

The Open Video Project

This project, sponsored and developed at the University of North Carolina, contains more than 2000 digitized clips and complete short films. The archive available here provides video clips from a variety of sources, including quite a few obtained from U.S. government agencies. The entire archive may be searched by keyword, or browsed by genre, duration, or thematic collection.

Images from the Fine Arts Museums of San Francisco.  Nothing is mentioned about personal or educational use of the images, however under "Use of Images," it is stated that "Any commercial use of images or requests for publishable-quality copies of images must be arranged through our Photo Services office."
