The Community Services Resource Guide is for parents of children with developmental disabilities who reside in the Shenendehowa School District.  The goal of this directory is to provide families with a clear, comprehensive, user friendly guide of family support and transition services in the Capital District.  Support and transition services include:  recreation, respite, advocacy, adult work and day programs, etc.

Information regarding the agencies included in this directory was submitted by the agencies themselves and should not be considered a recommendation from our district.

Information regarding issues such as guardianship, wills, and trusts is not intended to be, and should not be considered, a recommendation from our District.  These issues should be explored with your legal counsel.

This directory is supported by a grant from the Developmental Disabilities Planning Council.

ACKNOWLEDGMENTS

We would like to thank the parents and teachers in our District for sharing their valuable time and expertise in developing this directory; Capital District BOCES for allowing us to model our directory after their publication Tomorrow Becomes Today…Soon Enough, and the many agencies who responded so favorably to our request for information.

HOW TO USE THIS GUIDE

This resource guide provides information regarding services available in the Capital District area for children with developmental disabilities.  The guide is divided into several major sections which not only define services, but offer "at a glance" charts which list the agencies or organizations which offer such services.  More comprehensive information regarding these agencies may be found in the Chapter entitled "Agencies."  This chapter provides name, address, and telephone number of each agency, as well as a description of the agency's stated philosophy and a list of services provided.

If you do not find the service that you need for your child, do not hesitate to call one or more of the agencies to inquire.  Programs are constantly changing and being developed, and such a service may exist.

A Glossary of Terms, as well as Commonly Used Acronyms is listed in the back of this publication, since terminology in family and adult services is often different than terminology used in education.

Highlighted sections such as this appear throughout the guide which indicate "Hints" that parents might find helpful.
