This story provides an excellent model of contrast in its presentation of Mrs. Higgins--as the confident woman who impresses Mr. Carr and as the disconsolate mother alone in the kitchen.  Follow this model in developing one of the topics below devote one paragraph to what the character seems to be and a second para. to his/her real feelings.

 

 

1--shy girl/boy pretending to enjoy herself at at party then confessing her self-consciousness, later, when alone

 

2.  Parent pretending to be severe while scolding a child, but actually full of sympathy and tenderness.

 

3. a middle school speaker pretending to be confident, but actually quaking within

 

4. a football quarterback confidently predicting victory, but inwardly fearing defeat.
