Welcome to 8^th Grade Social Studies/American History. We will be studying the time periods from the Westward Expansion (1850’s) up through the present. Here is a brief list of the major topics that we will be covering:

1. Closing of the Frontier
2. Industry/Industrialization
3. Immigration
4. Imperialism/Spanish American War
5. World War I
6. Roaring Twenties
7. The Great Depression
8. World War II
9. The Cold War/Korea/Vietnam
10. Civil Rights Movement
11. Watergate
12. Carter through the Obama Administrations
13. Current Events

The course will include work in class, homework, projects (that will be worked on both in and out of school), DBQ’s, web quests and inquiries, book reports and hands on activities to bring history to life. Please be advised that this is a brief overview of what to expect this year from this course.

Please notice that participation plays a significant role in a student’s grade. Items included in participation:

• Showing up to class on time

• Being prepared with proper writing utensils,  notebook, agenda and your brain!

• Completed homework when assigned

• Participation in class discussions and group activities, and frequently raising hand

• Following classroom and school rules

• Seeking out extra help and making up individual work when absent

These items are essential to a student’s success in 8^th grade!

The class and homework assignments are listed on the Weekly Homework link and in the classroom for the week. These are to be copied into the agenda on the first class meeting for the week.  Homework is to be completed and handed in by the due date.
