TEACHER ASSIGNMENTS/TEAM ASSIGNMENTS/CLASS SCHEDULES
Posted on March 10, 2011

The schedule wizard (program used in creating student schedules)
determines the team, it is pretty much random. Homerooms are
assigned a bank/cluster of approximately 30 lockers; each
student from that homeroom is assigned one locker from that
bank/cluster. The homeroom teacher assigns the lockers
alphabetically by the last name according to his/her homeroom
roster. Unless there is a major problem with a student’s locker,
i.e. broken beyond repair, a request to change lockers is not
usually granted as there are very few “extra” lockers. The extra
lockers are reserved for new students coming into Gowana
throughout the school year.

There is no policy or guideline. Some schools usually separate
twins, some do not, depending on the information provided by parents.

Decisions regarding classroom placements are taken very seriously and
are based on a number of considerations which include the child’s
educational, behavioral, developmental and social needs.
Consequently, all members of the faculty working with a child are
involved in the placement process. The team may include the
following professionals the classroom teacher(s), AIS teachers, SPED
teachers, speech teachers, the school psychologist, the school
counselor, and the principal with input from parents and the special
area teachers.

The principal and staff members determine what
class students are assigned to and try to create a balance for each
class. Putting students from one neighborhood together in classes is
not typically one of the objectives.

Shenendehowa registers many new students over the summer. We typically
add classes up to the last two weeks of August because of enrollment
growth. Even if we were able to notify people on the final report
card, we would still do a mailing at the end of August. That is
mailing includes other information besides just the classroom teacher.

Other schools are not growing like Shen. We typically add classes up
until the last two weeks of August because of enrollment growth.

How is it determined what "team" a child will be
on when entering middle school and when will they be advised? Is it
true that band kids are kept together?

The majority of students are placed on teams randomly. Factors such as
acceleration, special education and Academic Intervention Services (AIS)
are reviewed to make sure that the teams are balanced. Schedules will
be mailed on or about 8/19. Music students will be assigned to any of
the three teams in each building. Questions, concerns should be
addressed to the school counselor.

Do you honor requests
for team placement in the middle school? I know in the elementary
school we received a letter that requests for specific teachers would
not be granted.

It is our policy not to honor requests.
