COLLEGE BOARD- PSAT, SAT and ADVANCED PLACEMENT
Posted on September 12, 2008

For the PSAT, you register in the counseling
center. The dates for the SAT and PSAT are listed in the district's
calendar.
To register and get the dates for the SAT you
can go on line to
http://www.collegeboard.com/. You can also register by mail, you
need an SAT Registration Booklet, which is available at in the
counselor's office. The SAT Registration Booklet contains the
registration form, return envelope, test dates, registration
deadlines, fees, instructions, test center codes, and other
registration-related information.
As far as what grade you have to be in to take
the test, talk to your counselor.

The College Board offers the PSAT once a year in October.

Scores are confidential. Students are given their scores individually
and privately. The College Board only notifies our school about who
qualifies as National Merit Scholarship candidates.
Posted on December 23, 2008
Generally no, but some colleges may consider
the score for admission or a scholarship.

The SAT review
class is offered by our Community Education office. They can be reached
at 881-0444 or you can get more information on our
website.

If you didn't "opt out" to have your scores listed, they will be on
your transcript. Please note that some colleges (you need to check)
will require you to have the scores directly sent through the College
Board.

Can a student take both
the Sat 2 in Math and Science, even if they are scheduled for the same
day? Are they at different times?

Students can take up to 3 subject tests in one
day without a conflict.

What time should people
arrive for the SAT and what should they bring?

Arrive by 8:00am and bring the SAT admission
ticket, a picture ID, two #2 pencils and an acceptable calculator.

My child received information in the mail from
the local office of a national test prep company. The mailing
targeted current 10th graders who will be taking the PSAT in the
fall. I don't know how the company got my child's information. Does
the district provide student names/addresses to such companies?

Shen does not provide test prep companies with
information about our students. Chances are that since your child has
registered to take the PSAT, the College Board may have provided this
information.

What are the
benefits of taking an AP (Advanced Placement) class?

Besides being more challenging
than most high school courses, there are colleges that either waive
required courses or grant college credits (saving tuition money). This
depends on the score achieved on the Advance Placement test. Students
should challenge themselves by taking Advanced Placement courses if
they are capable and should seek advice from their counselor if they
have questions.

Physical education is New York State mandated
course and required for graduation. The policy states that students
who are absent from class are required to make up classes for course
credit. In addition, they may need to make up any missed assessments,
quizzes, and or assignments on the day they are out. Our guidelines
are clearly listed on the Shenendehowa Physical Education web page,
http://www.shenet.org/district/academicdept/PE/pehs.htm. It is the
responsibility of the student to check with their respective teacher
upon their return. If further explanation is needed please contact
someone in the high school physical education department.

I believe
accelerated/honors classes increase a student's GPA/ranking by a
certain amount--by how much? Does each accelerated class provide their
own curve?

Accelerated/honors classes are not weighted
for the Grade Point Average (GPA). They are weighted for the class
rank. All honors courses (and accelerated courses for eighth graders
only) will be weighted by a multiplier of 1.03. All AP (advanced
placement), SUPA (Syracuse University Project Advance), and SUNY
courses will be weighted by a multiplier of 1.06.

Currently we do not offer online credit for AP courses. However, the
district is exploring online credit for the future.

Yes, they are not used towards the final high
school grade. AP exams are used by colleges to determine college credit.

December 1st is the deadline.

We offer AP courses in the major subjects and in those areas that
students have expressed interest. There has been little interest
expressed among students and community for AP in Chinese, Japanese and
Italian, for example. Similarly, art and physics are broken out into
specializations and these are not offered, yet AP Studio Drawing and
Physics B are available. However, college level courses are also offered
along with AP to provide a rich, wide-ranging curriculum.
We are consistently looking at adding more advanced courses of all kinds
and encourage students to challenge themselves by enrolling in these
classes.

The New York State Regents curriculum contains
content that is not covered in the AP Physics curriculum.
Specifically, New York State requires students to complete a unit of
study on The Standard Model of Fundamental Particles and Interactions
in Modern Physics. Shen (along with the rest of the state)
agrees that this course of study (which is completed between the AP
Exam in May and the end of the school year in June) is an
essential part of any High School Physics Program. Moreover, we
have incorporated the Regents Exam as 20 % of the final course grades.
Typically, our AP Physics students score very well on the Regents
Exam, which improves their overall grade for the course.

The New York State Commissioner’s Regulations require public school
students to earn a 1/2 unit of credit in Economics. At Shen, students
take either Economics or Advanced Economics-Honors to meet this
requirement. To adequately prepare students for both the AP Micro
& AP Macro Economics exams, students would have to take a full year of
Economics. This would make it difficult for students to meet the other
graduation requirement for 12th grade Social Studies: a one semester
course (1/2 unit of credit) in Participation in Government. In
addition, taking only AP Micro Economics or AP Macro Economics (one
semester for each course) doesn’t satisfy the New York State Economics
core curriculum requirements. However, students that
successfully complete the Advanced Economics-Honors course and are
willing to study for AP exams have successfully challenged either the
AP Micro or the AP Macro Economics exam. If you are
interested in challenging one of these AP exams, please meet with the
High School Academic Administrator for Social Studies in the beginning
of the school year.
