EXTRA CURRICULAR
Posted on December 1, 2010
The New York State Education Department has detailed stipulations about
Extra Curricular Account (finances). As for other protocols, there are
no other stipulations, other than meeting the specific charge or charter
of the respective club. If you have a specific concern you should see
the appropriate principal.

Sports are regulated by the NYS Public High
School Association. Clubs are often student driven and budgeted for on
an annual basis.
Posted on February 29, 2008

It depends on the club. Some clubs (i.e. drama, colorguard) have
tryouts. If you have a question about a particular club, contact the
main office at the school you or your child attends.
Posted on July 9, 2008

There is no list available. Your best bet is
to contact the principal.

Student interest. A student letter was sent
home to all 9-12 high school band students on August 9, 2005 inviting
students to join a pep band. Student response was minimal. A
follow-up attempt was made in September 2005 at the start of the
school year yielding not enough student participation to form an
ensemble.

Yes, club advisors get a stipend.

Per contract, teachers are paid extracurricular units for being club
advisors.

Approximately 60-75%.

Club finances has nothing to do with tax dollars and the school budget.
Clubs raise money through fundraising activities they take part in and
the money is to be used according to the wishes of the club
participants, with approval from the administration.

Students may attend meetings and may run for office. Please
speak to the advisors about how to be involved.

It is not the school district's decision.
Cheerleading is not
recognized by the New York State Public High School Athletic
Association as sports. However, the district provides funding for both
through the clubs/extracurricular units. Fundraising is done by all of
our groups, athletic and extracurricular clubs.

Those who supervise cheerleaders are appointed as advisors and do not
fall under the same guidelines as coaches in the athletic department.
However, certifying cheerleading coaches is something that we are
exploring.
Posted on February 7, 2008

No. It is done through the Shenendehowa
Teachers Association contract under clubs/extracurricular units. The
reason that it is not part of the athletic coaching salary schedule is
because cheerleading is not part of the New York State Public High
School Athletic Association.

Students need to be in the 9th grade to try
out for cheerleading
Posted on May 5, 2008
I will be in 7th grade
next year and want to try out for the freshmen cheerleading team.
How competitive is it and what do I need to do at the try out?

You cannot try out for the Freshmen team as a
7th grader. You must be in ninth grade in order to try out. There is
the Junior Plainsmen Cheerleading program available for 7th graders.
Cheerleading is very competitive: tumbling, high jumps, flexibility
and a great cooperative attitude are just some of what you need to
develop in order to be competitive.

Team and club are often used interchangeably
by people for many different school-related activities. For
purposes of identifying the funding source, it is technically referred
to as an extra-curricular club.

The sport of rowing has and continues to be a club sport, and is
partially funded by the district as an extracurricular club.
Posted on April 2, 2009
The Burnt Hills rowing facility was the result of a donation from
someone within that community. They receive very little, if any money
through the athletic budget. All programs and teams have to
fundraise to some extent to support the needs of the sport.

Yes. You can contact Shen Pen editors at
theshenpen@gmail.com and write the word "comment" or "question" in the
subject line. Be advised that the e-mail account is student run and
therefore read by the students.

Senior Portraits for the Yearbook are due to the Yearbook Club
no later than September 30. Girls must wear black drapes. Boys
must wear black tuxedoes with bow ties. The submission of the
portrait is the responsibility of the student. It can be in
wallet-sized hard copy, or on a CD. The student’s name, homeroom
teacher, and home phone must be clearly included with the
portrait. It is the student’s responsibility to check that the
Yearbook Club has received this portrait if the photographer
sends it in.
These can be dropped off in the front office or to Ms. Somogie,
room 161.
This and much more information about the Yearbook and Yearbook
Club is found at
Yearbook Club website.

The yearbook is a nearly 300-page, all-color, 12 X 9
hard covered book. The Yearbook Club makes no profit on the sale of
yearbooks. In fact, the club charges less than what the book actually
costs to publish. The rest is subsidized by Lauren Studios. The club,
along with the student fund and outside donations, donates books to
seniors who are unable to afford them.

Messages from Home forms are mailed home in November to parents of
Seniors. They are due back to the Yearbook Club before the December
break. Forms and information are also available via the Club's website
if anyone would like to begin early.

Girls must wear black drapes. Boys must wear black tuxes.
All senior portraits must be submitted to the Yearbook Club by September
30.
Portraits may be submitted on CD with a minimum of 3 megapixels, or in a
wallet sized hard copy. Student's name, homeroom teacher, and home phone
must be clearly printed with it.
These and many other questions are answered on the Yearbook Club
website.

Why are spring sports and the senior prom, not
featured in the high school yearbook of that year?

The yearbook goes to print before the spring
sports and proms have taken place. Therefore they are not generally a
part of the publication. Is it time for us to consider a video
yearbook so that the entire year's activities could be included?
Posted on November 7, 2008
No, it is not, however, class yearbooks are
only sold to members of the class in question and we do not make those
pictures available.

Clubs are not prohibited from holding tryouts.
Many of our clubs do so...drama, cheerleading, colorguard.
Posted on February 29, 2008
Can seventh graders
tryout for the Dance Team?

No. The Shen Dance Team is for students in grades 9-12. Tryouts are
held each year in May for the following year. So eighth graders would
try out in May to participate in gr. 9.

Do all NHS applicants receive a letter informing them of their results
Yes, all applicants receive a letter stating the decision of the NHS
Faculty Advisory Council.

If you meet the academic requirement, you will be invited to apply.
Posted on May 20, 2008

Students are invited to join the National
Honor Society in their junior year after demonstrating qualities of
service, leadership, character and scholarship on the application. For
more information, go to the NHS website at
http://www.nhs.us/s_nhs/index.asp or look at the application on
the high school's webpage
http://www.shenet.org/high/HS_Extracurricular/NHS/NHShome.htm.

The national NHS organization says local chapters may set their own
GPA (grade point average) requirement. In order to be invited to apply, the requirement
is that the student must have a 90% GPA (that has been the benchmark at Shen for the past 30 years or more). In applying, you
must also have completed 20 hours of community service PRIOR to applying,
show evidence of leadership and list any honors or awards you have
received. Shen also requires an essay.
The average, which generates the invitation letter to apply, is based
on the end of the 3rd marking period of your junior year. Anyone
interested in knowing more can go to
http://www.shenet.org/high/HS_Extracurricular/NHS/NHShome.htm
and look at the current application.

Your child can talk to the advisor or teacher or you can speak to your
child's counselor or the high school principal, Don Flynt, can help
facilitate the community service requirement.

A student must have at least a 90.000%
cumulative (grades 9-12) average at the end of the third quarter of
the senior year. For more information on NHS, see their
web page.
Posted on December 17, 2009
A member of NHS may be removed from NHS for failing to keep a 90
average. However, in the past we have traditionally notified students at
the end of each quarter they are in danger if the average has dropped.
Unweighted GPA s are calculated at the end of third quarter. Any NHS
member who has a GPA below 90 (no rounding up) and/ or has failed to
attend 50% of all meetings and/or has not completed their community
service hours will not receive gold cords for graduation.

How come grades can't be
weighted when applying for National Honor Society?

The new board policy to weight grades for
class rank began with the class of 2008. While there has been much
discussion about whether or not to weight grades for other
recognitions, at this point it is only done for class rank.

Because as an extracurricular activity it is sponsored
by the school district and you are entered into the contests
representing Shenendehowa Central Schools. According to the code of conduct,
all students are

There is no specific guideline, air
temperature or windchill number. Some mountains use a -20 air/windchill
temp to close the facility. The ski club advisors work with the
administration to determine whether or not the skiing should be
canceled.

It is NCBI - National Coalition Building Institute.
Posted on February 8, 2010
Students were recommended for NCBI by their counselors or school
administration. Students were selected based on a variety of reasons
looking for a cross section of the student population. This is the
second session and there will be more opportunities for students to
attend this year as well as throughout high school. Any students
interested in attending an NCBI session should see their counselor to
express their interest and for additional information about the program.
